Arrow The Blue M2

Hello All

Had my M2 for a few months and decided to start the build thread.

Previous car was an E46 M3 ... I still reminisce from time to time about that glorious S54!

The M2

I took delivery of the M2 back in September and have enjoyed everyday of it so far:

Running In and New Car Prep

Towards the end of 2016 the car had it's running in service.

I also treated the car to new car preparation with "siramik" glasscoat.

It's literally one of the best things I've ever done to a car... cleaning is effortless

Defeating Auto Start/Stop - permanently

Note: This will only affect some markets due to "factory configuration".

If there's one thing I despise about modern BMWs, it's the pesky engine Auto START/STOP feature.

While you can turn this off, it is activated by default every time you start the engine.

BMW F series owners will know of course it can be coded out, some F8x guys have already done so on their ///M's.

I wanted to wait until the RI and get the latest software updates before coding it out.

I tackled this recently, below is a high level overview of it all:

No more auto start/stop ever

In addition I coded the puddle lights (door handles) to illuminate upon reverse.

You can find copies of E-Sys on ebay or at bimmerfest.com with instructions

Gyeon Q2M Silk Drying towel

The weather was decent today so I washed the car.
In the past I've used typical drying towels like the 'Wooly Mammoth'.

The Q2M Silk Towel has been getting rave reviews so I decided to give it go.
It's incredible - the absorbency is amazing and I was able to dry the car quickly.

But here's the thing - Looking at a wooly mammoth towel in comparison, the Q2M may look like it couldn't absorb anymore water after drying one panel.
Don't be fooled, I was able to go around the whole car without having to drain the towel. It's also lighter than my previous wooly mammoth towels
which comes into play as towels get heavier with water absorption.

If you're in the market to replace your existing drying towel I highly recommend the Q2M.
You can read the other reviews here:

A few snaps after cleaning!

Interior Update

With some help from Phil at Costwold BMW, I picked up some interior trim bits and installed some of them this week.

The dash trims are coated in alcantara cloth and looks much better.

Install was ok, simply remove existing trims - swap over the vent units and reinstall.

The trims come with new clips to assure solid fitment.

I never understood why the auto start/stop is coded backwards for you guys. Here in Canada it already comes programmed to stay at whatever mode you last left it in.

Bimmer Masterpieces Alcantara Case Install

This week, I received my Alcantara Case from BM!

This case is designed specifically for the F22/F87 vehicles and is offered in both Alcantara or Leather.

The case fits over the instrument cluster, taking inspiration from the unique casing on the BMW 1M instrument cluster.

I purchased the 'CS' model as I prefer less stitching compared to the GTS model. That said, if the CS wasn't in stock I would have bought the GTS instead, it's a great case!

I took my time on this taking photos to help others with their install - lets do this!

Delivery is quick, within 3 days from order it's here!

Preparation

1. I decided to mask off the edges on the underside where the alcantara cloth is glued to the plastic mould.

I did this just incase the glue softens (on a hot day) and makes contact with the dash - this step isn't mandatory but I have OCD.

2. With masking out the way I noticed the top layer was 'flat' compared to the other areas. I assume this is because in transit the box may have been upside down, flattening the fibers .. not a problem, I can fix it!

3. Using the crevice tool on my hoover I sweep over the top layer a few times. The idea is to encourage the fibres to stand up again...and as you can see it did the trick - wow!

Install

** always follow BM install sheet - use my instructions as a supplement!

1. Using a Torx (star) 20 bit, unscrew both bolts on the instrument cluster tab.

2. Now tug forward on the instrument cluster, and allow it to rotate towards you.

3. You can leave it in this position for now, no need to pull it right out.

4. Now slide the casing directly onto the dashboard head - it should fit easily (snug).

5. If you find the rear part of the casing (nearest to windscreen heater) is not sitting down properly do the following:

+ Apply pressure using one hand on the front as shown
+ With your other hand keep tapping the rear part of the case until it is properly seated (you'll know by feel).

6. Now reinstall the instrument cluster

7. Before admiring your work, comb/hoover (if alcantara) the casing as you'll have hand marks from the install.

8. Done!

A big thanks to Bimmer Masterpieces, the casing is excellent!

The fitment is great and looks OE - I love it!

That's all for now, here are some recent pics of my M2...

Good choices of interior mods. Do you mind taking a picture of the whole interior?

Very nice, loving the interior changes you've done, if you haven't already i'd consider the M Performance DCT trim and handbrake set with the c/f and alcantara pieces. I recently fitted it on mine and i reckon it will go perfect with your additions.
