GM marketplace... WTF?
So I am one of these old-school dudes who is not happy about all the technology in cars today.
I subscribe to the opinion that manufacturers cram all of this half-baked, cumbersome electronic gadgetry into their cars to appeal to the masses, but this creates a big problem - people are more distracted than ever and perhaps this is the reason death toll on the roads is rising. So as a solution to the problem they created, those same manufacturers now introduce all sorts of driver's safety aids, so you don't forget how to brake, stay in your lane or watch where you are going while trying to figure out how to operate all these huge and beautiful LCD panels in front of you. And since the cars can do most anything for you nowadays, those LCD screens can now increase in size and numbers. Great! And the result is that today's cars are increasingly more complex, expensive and prone to all sorts of glitches and failures and sadly, hardly any safer... This is not just my opinion - it is shared by many experts, including those involved in traffic safety and they are worried. But this.... this is too much. You are now supposed to do your shopping while "driving" because god forbid the average 46 minutes a person spends behind the wheel be wasted on silly things like... actually driving the goddamn car while being focused on the task at hand. I present you "GM Marketplace". WTF is wrong with the world today??!! Last edited by vinylengraver; 12-06-2017 at 08:42 PM.. |

I share a similar sentiment about unnecessary gadgets/tech in vehicles today. However, for what it's worth, I'm guessing this particular GM Marketplace will only function when the car is in park (unless coded).

Do you have authority for your proposition that the "death toll on the roads is rising"? And to the extent the death toll is as high as it is, does your authority (if any) discirminate between drunk driving and other causes?

National traffic data does show an increase in fatalties on the highways this year. It's due to distracted driving. And distracted driving can include something that used to be so simple like turning on the air conditioning or adjusted the temperature is now several buttons clicks in a computer menu.
Most people can't drive a car. Most people struggle to use technology. Put these two things together and it's disastrous |

The data are ambiguous. On the other hand I'm apalled at the number of yahoos who text, put on make up, eat, and perform other tasks when they should be driving.

This is what people want to do instead of drive. A few of us would rather have exciting cars to drive, but the majority of people want nothing to do with it, they want to surf the net during that time. When I look left and right at intersections, it's not just young people, it's all ages.

I could see a use for that technology in a rent a car , with a passenger, out of your area of familiarity. No other use for it, just drive your car

Even being a millennial who works in the technology field, I hate all this infotainment shit in cars. All I need is a GPS to help make navigating easier and an aux port or USB so I can play music from my phone. I don't need Apple CarPlay, Android, lane sensing, backup cameras, a satellite image of a 360 degree view of my car or any of that shit. I drove a newer Mercedes SUV recently that had the stupid blind spot monitoring garbage. Every time a car comes up next to you on the highway a damn LED triangle pops up on the mirror. This is super annoying and distracting at night. How hard is it to turn your head and look?

For me, one of the greatest joys in life is driving. It doesn't matter if it's a 5 minute trip to the grocery store, or a one hour drive around town with nothing to do just to soak up the sun (Roadster guy here). I rarely listen to the radio at all, almost always leave the phone at home, etc. I want nothing to distract from the absolute freedom a car represents and provides for me. I can think of few things in life better than driving on a 75 degree sunny day, with a clean car and not a care in the world.
These folks who push self driving cars and all this other iDumbass crap will never make a bit of sense to me. Life is short, slow down and enjoy it. Unplug, rest your eyes, you're not a very important person whoever the hell you are. Your iDumbass texts can wait a couple hours. And for God's sakes, get rid of the shitty automatics and paddle shifters and get a proper six speed!! |

Completely agree! People just aren't capable of operating a vehicle anymore. Let alone figuring out how to turn their lights on at night.
