Stud conversions - who is good?
See topic.
I'd like to go for a kit that uses M14x1.5mm thread pitch on the nut side instead of our stock 1.25 pitch, because there are more nut options in M14x1.5 (I already own a set of silver and black Gorilla nuts in this size from my Audi). I know these kits exist, but not all of them change thread on the wheel/nut side of the stud. I don't plan on using spacers, I'm not into stance, so I don't need or want super-long studs. I'd rather order wheels that fit correctly / have correct offset. I was just going to stick with the stock wheels for summer, I'm grabbing a set of 18s for winter, and then depending on how much track work I do, I might find a square track/autox setup but that is still TBD. Car will see salt so studs need to be weather-resistant.

Check out Motorsport Hardware. I'm currently running their studs and lug nuts and they've been tried and true on and off track.
The specific kit you'd probably be interested ing: https://motorsporthardware.com/produ...-14x125-14x15/ Good luck!

I don't plan to use spacers, but I want something that converts to 14x1.5mm thread pitch because I have two sets of bolts in that size (the duplex chrome and duplex black chrome) already.
So I actually don't want super-long bullet nose studs, because I want to use these closed-end bolts. Largest concern is that I need whatever to be able to hold up to the elements; we get road salt aplenty here. I've had some stud kits in the past (on VW/Audi) that are black-oxide coated and they rust... not good.

I've been looking around and it seems like all of the studs on the market are crazy-long, presumably to allow for thickass spacers... which I don't get, because ideally you want zero spacers on a track-day car, and track days / frequent wheel swaps are the only thing that really justifies a stud conversion at all.
I've found maybe one or two options that are shorter than 70mm overall length, but they are m14x1.25 thread which drastically limits your nut choice (and I don't own any nuts in that pitch). I have these two sets of Gorilla nuts I'd prefer to re-use that are already M14x1.5. I contacted motorsport hardware and they didn't have any suggestions other than "use our open-end nuts." I also questioned them about the corrosion resistance of their stuff, since I've been bitten in the past with this (Apex Competition's "track" grade black-oxide studs are not all-season-ready and will rust; their silver/zinc coated stuff holds up fine though). MH's answer about salt resistance was as follows (direct quote): Quote:

I also think they will be too long to be used with my ~2" deep nuts... I'm starting to think this is a lost cause, which pisses me off since I have two sets of the damn things. Anyone know roughly how thick an average wheel is, as far as how much stud length it eats up?

Why not just use the BMW parts from the M235i racing?

Is the wheel-side of that threaded M14x1.25 though (like the hub-side)? I explicitly do not want that; I want a stud that is M14x1.5 thread pitch on the "outside," which allows for a much better nut selection. (There are very few M14x1.25 nut options on the market.) Additionally, if it was designed for a pace car / racing application, there's a decent chance it isn't corrosion-resistant (the assumption is that the studs get replaced regularly by a maintenance/race team, so they give them temporary coatings rather than stuff designed to hold up to daily-usage).

My concern is the thread pitch on them (which isn't documented but I'm guessing is 1.25 instead of 1.5), as well as corrosion resistance...

Why do you want 1.5 thread, what is wrong with 1.25?

Much easier to cross thread 1.25
Almost no options for different nuts in 1.25 I already own two sets of nuts in 1.5 that would work great for my needs

The TPI ones seem to be extremely well made and I don't think that cross threading would be an issue. With the bullnose the initial threading of the nut to the stud is very smooth and engages nicely.

Titanium isn't especially hard, it can be drilled out. Only reason to use titanium is weight or corrosion resistance. I've never seen a titanium screw-in stud though, only titanium nuts.

Standard titanium is not much harder than steel. It's a 6 on the mohs scale, steel is a 5.
You can drill out titanium, I don't know what you are talking about. You'd want a tungsten-carbide drill bit to do it, but it's certainly possible. Completely moot point since I'm not looking for titanium anyway though.

I'm delighted with the MSI studs/nuts. They do offer the 1.5 pitch threat for the business end. They are high strength steel and so are the nuts, but the nuts are coated. The dry lube on the studs - we shall see.
Are you going to DD the car through RE winter? The studs on my M4 made it through 3 winters w/very minimal corrosion. I went with MSI for the M2, which is now a second track/street car that will never see winter. |
