It's also worth re-mentioning -- you're breaking in the clutches in the diff as well here. Even if you subscribe to the concept that the plant has already beat on the motor a bit and the rings are already seated... the diff is still being broken in.

And how does engine rpm relate to this?

(I'm so sorry for helping keep this thread off track! I really am!)

Good point... guess the diff is spinning at road speed no matter what you do with the motor.

Allow me to chime in, I hope I can provide some relevant content to the discussion.

I am a former car salesman, having worked for CJDR, Honda, Infiniti and Lexus.

I can say with certainty that no dealership, anywhere, adheres to a break-in policy for new cars. When they are PDI'd by the techs, they are taken out for a semi aggressive drive. After removing the plastics covering it for transport, gassing it up and washing it - the car is put out front in the inventory for test driving.

From there, the sales person and his prospect take it out willingly. Although most of my test drives were subtle, the performance models taken out always got romped on.

Millions of cars are sold this way. IMO, its OK to drive your car aggressively from the start. The engines have already been tested at their respective plant.

Hi Guys

I get my brand new M2 LCI before two week. I drove now about 500 miles and try to drive the car smooth and on diffrent roads (Highway, city, mountains...). Yesturday, I switched on manual (i have DCT) and i go two gears down...maybe from 5th gear to 3th. The RPM goes for a short time to 5500. What you think, was this bad for the engine? I have now a bad conscience but the engine was warm...

What you think? Its no problem?

The car is ruined. You better get rid of it

It's fine. Go drive your car

Why do you suspect it would be bad for the engine?

Personally I adopted the “progressive” break in which is inbetween hard breakin and doing it by the book and being a granny.

Never past 4K for the first 300 Miles. After that I went up to 5K l. During the first 30 Miles I made sure to vary RPMs. Then the remaining until 300 I always varied the load but not exceeding 60%. Afterwards I slowly went up in load but not passing 5K after every heat cycle.

Car has not burned a single drop of oil. It’s done very many hard pulls and sees redline at least a few times per week.

4500 Miles now and just done a second oil change

The manual states only to vary the load, do not exceed 5.5k, not over 105mph, no WOT or full kick down for the first 1200 mi........ I have been staying just under that the whole time and am at 700 so far. I take it out on the highway and load on load off...push it hard but not too hard.

So my question.... at the perf center i wonder what kind of break in they do on the cars....they had low miles when I was there and get the shit worked out of them. Oh and when you test drive a new car they get kind of worked hard right out of the blocks..... and they seem them as new

Last December, i put myself on the waiting list at Sylvania BMW (Sydney) for the M2. Literally, last December and it arrives in 2 or so weeks (already docked at Port Kembla ). I'm upgrading from a Hyundai i30 (I know right, so much for baby steps). Great news is, it was an early July build, therefore an LCI

Every day, i have watched videos, reviews, read forums, etc.. I have only ever seen the M2 about 7-8 times on the road and yet to hear it roar (i have heard the Cold Start though - WOW!)

The question that i have today - what's the overall driving experience like during the break-in? Will i still feel a fair bit of power? Looking for your experiences and answers, without the obvious "It'll still be much quicker than the i30" I do drive my brother's Audi SQ5 a fair bit, however i know that this is quicker by about 1 second (which is heaps in car language)

On another note - video's do no justice for volume. Is it really loud? And will i hear much of it during the break-in?

Incase you're interested - Long Beach Blue, Sun-Roof, Heated Seats (no longer standard with the LCI)

Thanks guys!
Congrats on the M. I hate to be one of those guys, but here it goes: don't do what anyone here says. Read the owners manual which you can read online now. Break in the M2 exactly how BMW says to do it in the manual. I know I'll get stoned by folks on this board for my comments on this subject, but do yourself a favor - do it like BMW says to do it. Don't listen to anything else.

What Rich said...... I have found it hard to follow but have done my best and have worked it harder than I prolly should but I should be good. Now when you get past your 1200 mi it gets really easy to slip up...if I kind of step on it in sport mode (not even close to WOT) it wants to run up to 6500 before it shifts

So let me ask you this....at what mileage is it safe to do base line dyno runs?
