Center IP display area - reverting to MPH

This is annoying me, and I haven't been able to find pattern to it or a fix.

What happens: I set the lower center portion of the instrument panel to display "blank" and the miles/odo (using the button on the end of turn signal stalk). Sometimes, but not always, that display reverts to showing the digital speed display. I have paid attention to when it does/doesn't reset, and there is no pattern at all that I can discern. Short trips, long trips, overnight, sometimes it reverts and sometimes not.

Is this happening to anyone else? It's annoying as hell, especially since when it's in digital speed display mode the miles/odo is not shown. I mentioned it at the dealer during my 1200-mile break-in service, and they were baffled.

I keep mine set to the temperature display, and it always stays there except if I use navigation...

You do know that you can turn off some of the options for the center display though, right? It's under vehicle settings on the iDrive screen.

Yep, and I've actually disabled quite a bit. The digital speed display is not one of the things you can disable.

Odd thing is that since I posted this it hasn't happened again...

Mine just started doing this the other day. Really annoying. I'll be telling the dealer about it and hoping they can run it up the chain and maybe we see a firmware fix in the future... but won't hold my breath.

I was able to "fix" it by cycling through all the options and back to temperature, and then it seemed to behave again, but who knows what is causing it.

Interesting.

My car hasn’t had the issue since I took it in for the run-in service. The service order doesn’t say that they flashed the car with new code, and the software version number didn’t change, so I don’t think they changed anything during the service.

I’ll try to re-pro it from time to time.

Mine did it another time after I posted. In the grand scheme of things it's not that big of a deal, but when you drive the car at least twice a day, it's still kind of irritating.

Mine does this all the time, and I agree, it is annoying.

I'm not sure if I'm doing the right thing, but I try to wait for the engine oil to get up to temp before I a) drive it a bit harder, and b) turn auto start / stop on. For these reasons, I leave it on oil temp the whole time until it's up to temperature, then I switch it to something else.

I wish there was a wait to code that in... show oil temp on start up until up to x degrees...

I've just been trying to keep mine on temp the entire time, but it keeps changing itself.

Nezil yours already had the cluster update, right? So I can uncross my fingers there...

Nope, I'm scheduled for service next Thursday. Will be a little over 1,200 by that time I suspect. I'm at 1,045 now.

Off topic I know, but the car feels a lot different now than it did 1,000 miles ago. The clutch bite has softened a lot, and the engine is a lot happier to rev. Whoever says that cars don't brake in at all has got to be wrong. Brakes, Clutch, all moving parts, bearings etc must free up in the first few hundred miles. It's a lot easier to drive smoothly now.

Clutch changes for sure, it's a friction part, as do brakes.

The rest of it, not a whole lot on a modern car. Placebo is a hellofa drug.

I haven't had a single recurrence of the display reverting back to MPH since my run-in service.

Something that DID happen this past week was that my iDrive rebooted *twice* during my 25min morning commute on Monday. I was cruising along and all of a sudden the display went blank and completely restarted. About five minutes later it did it again. It hasn't happened since then. Very bizarre.

Yeah, mine has stayed on temp so far since the re-flash, but I haven't driven it too many times since then (just picked it up last Thursday PM).

My speaker hiss / noise has recurred twice since the service though... they were hoping that maybe the re-flash would help (apparently the iDrive firmware gets updated as well, not just the cluster?), but it actually happened again when I went to start the car in the dealership parking lot.

I would've run back in and tried to get someone to hear it for proof, but I came in right near closing and there was only one service writer left and he was busy, plus the parking lot was snow-dusted and slippery as hell.
