I just signed up for 5 track days this summer in my area for $1400 and change. The average cost of a speeding ticket with 6 years insurance surcharges in my area is $1714.00.

The effectiveness of a detector varies by driver. People assume you can blindly speed all the time and the detector will protect you. With that mind set, there's no point buying one.

Recognize it as an assistance tool.

With good situational awareness it will be very effective.
For example,
Observe if the stretch of road ahead has places on the side for police to hide or park.
Memorize familiar roads so you can be more liberal with speed on them.
Speed when you can see further ahead.
Slow down or be ready to brake if there's a crest coming up or coming out of a bend.
Always observe all cars in front of you and behind you.
Speed in situations that's suitable to speeding.
Speed in bursts.

Other than that it is great at alerting the presence of police near by even if you can't see them and established speed traps approaching.

Once you get use to how to utilize a detector, you won't want to drive without it.

Maybe I don't understand how the detectors work fully. If you need to get fairly close to the cop before it accurately detects and alerts you, isn't it usually too late? I mean is there a lingering signal that comes from the radar guns that a detector can pick up from far away?
i have picked up cops over a mile out with my old ass 8500
