Suggested Track Prep

Hi gals & guys,
I'll be headed to my first track day (Ridge Motorsports Park in WA) with the M2. I've done lots of autocross over the last few years but track days can be a whole different animal. I was hoping I could get a few pointers about what to bring and do to my car for prep.
My car is bone stock and I figured my PSS will hold up better than my autocross tires so I was planning on taking those.
Do you suggest getting some upgraded pads? Like yellow stuff?
My friend just came back from the season opener and he told me a lot of cars (not M2's) were struggling with the heat, have you experienced trackers seen any heat issues with the M2's? Were you able to do anything about it?

Anyways I am extremely excited and I have about a month to prep so I appreciate any helpful hints.

Cheers

I would suggest Pagid RS29 Pads. They are pricey but well worth it. Greatly improves braking. I took my M2 all stock except Pagids to the track and it performed amazing. Some basic tools, Torque wrench, Tire Pressure guage, Helmet, Water, Folding Chair, Brake Fluid. These are the very minimum, and what I took with me to Whiskey Hill last week. Have fun.

Pads Pads Pads...I like PFC 08...good initial bite, easy to modulate, no fade and good life. I would also flush out the factory brake fluid and replace with Motul 660 or Castrol SRF.

Definitely pads and fluids for peace of mind and solid pedal feel.

Never had heat issues (although don't think it'll get too hot this month).

I'll be there this weekend with the Audi Club. When are you going?

Thanks for all the comments guys! Pads and Fluids it is!

Stupid Question, are your suggested pads ok for daily or can/should I switch back to my normal pads. I just don't want them to require hard breaking in order to work on my morning commute.

I am going June 17 with Rev Scene. Looking at the attendee list, there will be a Huracan Performante, which should be interesting.

Track pads can be fine for daily driving but will typically be very noisy.

I use PFC 08s, but Hawk, Ferodo, Pagid, others all make an assortment of pads that would be good for track days.

Any suggestions for pads that don't clunk? Using Pagid RS29 pads which don't come with a shim, and they clunk quite a bit during normal driving, going over small bumps....surprisingly they don't seem t0o squeal much.

Is it worth switching back and forth between track pads and normal pads? Or does it ruin the bedding in?

A lot of threads on this subject.

For entry-level track, you likely don't need a full race pad (PFC08 or Pagid Renn Sport ). A stop tech or Hawk HPS 5.0 May work for double duty. This depends on your ability level. If you've done 5+ track days w/instruction, you'll need race pads.

If it's your first time out, I'd get the Hawk pads and possibly Motul RBF600 or equivalent fluid. Ensure you cook the brakes w/a cool down lap and I sometimes drive the paddock for 5 mins, if I can find an open area, after my session so I allow enough cool down.

I am an advanced driver and I swap my pads every time I run HPDE events. Bedding is an issue for race and street pads but I find the PFC work the best for this

Keep the questions coming!

I would switch inbetween, driving track pads on the street sucks. I would also flush the fluid. I have not had any issues with overlaying stock and Hawk DTC60/70 compounds. If you do just get a rotor hone on a drill and scrub the rotors clean and rebed.

I would switch... It's fairly easy on these calipers You can get matching compounds...

Carbotech 1521/XP## don't require rebedding. You mentioned Yellow stuff.. I've used them with red stuff on my previous car.

Noise and dust levels would be considerations if you don't plan on swapping pads.

I think the clunk is because the aftermarket pads don't have the "ears" that the OEM ones have. Doesn't affect performance at all, so I just live with the low speed clunks

Correct — at least with the Pagid RS29s.

Yep, my Hawks only clunk when I reverse not over bumps

I would switch back to OEM after track event. It is very easy (hammer and drift pin). Plus track pads are expensive, why waste them?

The PFC08s haven't been clunking. But they squeal like a pig.

I don't switch. My M2 is a track and weekend car, so I've just been living with the squealing on the street. But it's easy and quick to do if you have the time/space. I don't have a private garage so just keep the track pads in.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I was going to go with the Hawk DTC-60's, but their availability was an issue so I ended up switching last minute to the Pagid RS29's. They should arrive just in time for me to pick them up before I have to leave for the track day. Motul RBF600 is going in on Monday.

Excitement for the big day is building!

You'll love the Pagids. I just did two consecutive days with them at the Mont Tremblant circuit and they were rock solid. Its a great feeling know you don't have to worry about fade, and can brake late into a corner

I like the pagids. I have two days on them and so far so good. I hate them on the street as they really squeal. My wife really can’t stand them either. I wish there was a way to fix that. The pads, not the wife

I haven’t changed my fluid yet. Things got just a little bit spongy during my last laps at Autoclub Speedway. I’m going to swap out with Motul 600, but I stupidly didn’t order enough and I’m heading back to the track Sunday.
