brake shields - stones/road debris getting hung up
Folks,
Is anyone else having issues with squeling/graunching brakes due to stones/ road cr@p getting caught between disc/rotor and dust/heatshield ? If so is there any OE remedy PUMA/QEP to rectify from BMW ? TIA BP

Is it an intensive proces replacing those rear shields..? I had it occur 3 times on driving 33.000km (lasted 1 minute or so) and was wondering if it is worth the change? Also does these stones/debris that gets hung in there could damage the discs/rotors?

I am not 100% on the process, it was done by the dealer. On most cars the caliper, rotor and hub assemblies have to be removed. As far as damage occurring, it is definitely possible that if something big enough and hard enough get caught it could damage the rotor. Hope this helps.

I had mine replaced at the first service. My car was at the dealer 3 days because they didn't realize that wheel bearings had to be replaced as part of the work thus didn't order them with the new rear brake shields.

Quick fix when this happens is to drive backwards.
Haven't had it happen in my M2 yet, but happens every winter in my Saab. They throw gravel on the roads here for traction. I just go to the nearest parking lot and hit the gas in reverse until the sound goes away. Another option is to push on the dust shield with a screw driver or something until the rock falls out, but I never had success doing that. |

Are the updated parts F&R or rear only ?

There was definitely some kind of recall. BMW doesn't just put new parts on your car for the hell of it. The money has to come from some kind of recall.

I asked the dealer about this during my last service. Nada. Do you have a recall #?
I'm also not convinced this is related to captured stones. I notice the noise mostly when the suspension fully extends downward on on side, e.g. turning left or right while the road dips on the opposite side, if that makes sense. Could have been done by the dealer under "customer satisfaction / goodwill" |

A recall is a safety related item. The backing plate issue was a service bulletin which is for common issues but it was never a recall. BMW only replaces the backing plates under warranty. If your warranty is expired then you pay for the updated backing plates.
