Suggestions for M2 (when announced)
Wanted to start a thread here for the future M2 owners on what they want to see and not see on the 201x M2. I just joined the M235i ranks and have one initial observation I would like to see the new M2 not have:
Too many M badges! The things are everywhere inside and outside the car, leaning more toward the fanboy racer crowd IMHO. To BMW: Please ensure the new M2 has the M Power badges in the following locations only:

I'd like to see a true M department designed motor and not just a slightly tweaked version of the motor in the M235i. I'd also like it to maintain full turbo boost to 7k rpm, have a close-ratio 6spd manual designed for peformance over economy (optional DCT fine), optional carbon-ceramic brakes with lots of air cooling directed at the rotors, lightweight sport/racing seats as an option, carbon roof (without sunroof), and a curb weight of 3,000 pounds or less. Real M-LSD (electronically controlled clutch-type LSD as in M3/M4).

Why would that be? Nothing there that the M3 doesn't already have or could have without much expense and it costs $62k. I'd be happy with a few less luxury features to trim costs...
This is your wishlist?: "gimme an N55. 350hp. 3100 pounds. 6 speed. navigation and bluetooth. some leather. don't care about anything else. i want it for $55k." Sounds like you'd be perfectly happy with a slightly massaged M235i as far as I can see - no point in a separate model for that (just get the ECU very mildly flashed and a few weight saving pieces)...

400+ pounds of weight savings is a little more than a few changes.

I haven't done a ton of research on the M2 as the 235 is more than sufficient for my needs and I have one on order. Spending the extra money would have no benefit to me for a DD in the city and I actually may enjoy the M2 less. That said, is the M2 going to be as widely available in volume similar to the M3s and M4s of the world? Or will it be limited a la the 1M? I ask simply because driving the 235 for three years will cost me what, $20k? You could, and many did, drive the 1M for free for 3 years. Dealer in Chicago told me the other day he sold one that had BEEN HIT for significantly more than original MSRP.
Yes, during ownership of an M2 you'd have more $ tied up, but if you get it back at the end and could drive it for free like the 1M that doesn't really matter. |

I hadn't realized that the M235i is 200 pounds heavier than the larger M4. That is pretty porky.

Another way of looking at it is that the M4 is 200 pounds lighter than the 435i. M made the E9x and E6x M cars porkers with lots of power, now they're getting back to making lighter cars, hopefully that trend continues with the M2.

Just noticed that the M235i allows for a Moonroof-delete option - I would select that for sure if I was buying one. Don't save any money, but you lose weight off the top of the car (probably around 60 pounds) and gain headroom.

Oil temp gauge.
And the S55 powertrain from the M3/4 would be perfect.

i would not be surprised if they do the limited edition thing again....because it generates a lot of hype for the "M" brand and excitement. It sucks that it creates that whole mess of not being able to get one.....i know because i was not able to get an allocation for a 1M when i wanted one.....after i turned one down when i wasn't sure about it (slaps forehead). Already decided to buy a M2. Unless the X1M comes out with a manual trans( i doub't it). Not looking for the fastsest track car...Just road car for me and looks are as important as function as sub 5 sec 0-60 is all i need in speed. But for looks PLEASE BMW show some muscle and flair(fenders) in the rear end plus wider rubber in the rear(muscle) and some flair in the front and i will be a happy dude.....and yeas PLEASE come out with some unique colors for the M2....Also like the 1M enhance the interior a tad with unique M2 trim.
***also use as much CF as possible, and keep the weight down. |

When a head honcho Matthias Muller from Porsche had said that the next Boxster/Cayman may have a flat four, and that it could push out 400 hp, I think a high winding turbo four (about 360-385 hp) would be real good for the M2...lightweight, tight, good handling.
