Is it safe to drive this? / What is this noise?
I got my car back from the dealer last week (it needed a bunch of stuff). Car has 6,500 miles on it, production date 2/19/16. It is a manual.
I complained that I heard an intermittent noise (it sounded like the aluminum cans dropping like everyone described on here). The dealer told me they couldn't replicate it. Fast forward to the next morning and the sound has multiplied. Anyways, should I have this thing flatbeded to the dealership, or is it fine getting another 10 miles on it? Here is what I have now:

Might be a rock lodged in the brake shield. They usually drop out eventually (hence the intermittent noise) but occasionally can get stuck....or it could be something worse.
Either way I'd probably get it towed which is covered under warranty anyway. |

Does it happen in neutral? Not sure how you pop the DCT into neutral while moving, but if you can, and it still happens, then it is almost surely rocks stuck in the rotor shield.

Yes, it does happen in neutral / the clutch engaged while rolling (it is a manual). However, if you listen to the second video, it is random noises while under load.

I get this all the time in my F80. Usually go over some bumps just to let the pebble get free. Freaked me out first time I heard it, but then read that several others had similar issues.

I'd flat bed that for sure. Good thing you have video evidence. There's no way in hell they can say that's a normal sound.

Talked with the shop foreman when I dropped it off yesterday. He doesn't think its the shields, but he is going to look. They are going to start by draining the diff fluid looking for anything and go from there.
The dealer was awesome to get it in so fast. Still no updates, but I guess no news is good news....

Metal Shards In the Diff Fluid!
And.... we have our answer. Diff is ordered and I will have the car back on Friday.
ps: I am a little surprised no one made fun of my garage in the first video.

That's disconcerting (the shards in diff). These are supposedly the same diffs used in the M3/M4, why are they self-destructing in the lower-horsepower car?

But the m3/m4 is having the same problem. If it was safety related the TSB would definitely be a recall.

That's the scary thing though, problems with a differential can definitely be safety related. If that diff fully locks up / binds and causes a wheel to lock up, the ass of the car is going to come around and who knows what mayhem that might cause.
