bulletproofing for track

it would seem that the M2 N55 on track is dealing with cooling well. (it may just well be the absence of data)

i'm looking to bulletproof the motor for track use, especially with the approaching summer (temps). i plan on running stock map for now, maybe a stg 1 in the future.

my plan was to:
1) install high capacity/efficiency FMIC
2) install high capacity/efficiency Oil Cooler
3) GC camber plates
4) pagid rs 29 pads and motul fluid
5) schroth quick clip 4-point harness
6) plus/minus BMS catch can

thoughts?

I've done everything except #6. My understanding is that they've corrected the oil issue with the latest iteration of the N55. I purchased the BMS can but I couldn't find anywhere to install it! It's seriously tight under there. I do think this engine has a sensitivity to high temperatures. I was running JB+ and at both Watkins Glen and Mosport and my car would go into limp mode near the end of each 20 min. session. I wasn't sure if it was because of overheating, or the lack of ability of the JB+ to properly adjust parameters to deal with other extremes. My car is in the shop patiently awaiting the delivery of the Dinan Stage 4 turbo and Dinantronics software upgrade. They are also installing the Evolution Oil cooler and the Lightweight brake cooling system. I'm hoping that will kill the limp mode issue. Also hope someone develops an upgraded radiator also. I never had a problem with the brakes with the Pagids. No fade and they last an incredibly long time. The cooling kit should only make them better.

I found this chart that gives an example on what systems BMW software adjusts/shuts down in extreme coolant conditions

Don't think you need most of that for bullet proofing. Bare minimum is high temp brake fluid and track pads.

I haven't seen any evidence the car NEEDS camber plates yet. Done 3 days and no crazy outside edge wear, car turns in great.

The Quick Fit Pro harnesses are VERY nice, keeps you from flopping around in the stock seats.

I haven't had any limp mode but I'm stock and haven't run in above 85F temp yet.

I guess the need for camber plates depends on how aggressively you are using the car on the track. Factory alignment settings. Delamination after three sessions at Watkins Glen. And this was at 36lbs. hot. Clearly, I needed camber plates.

Are those Super Sports or Sport Cups?

I have not had positive experiences with Super Sports on track (in my old 135i with about 1.8 camber). They rolled over easily and tore the outsides. Also, while replacing them, I learned that they had ripped apart at the rim bead.

I am thinking of switching to the cups once my car arrives so your answer would be helpful. Thanks.

Super Sports. Never had this issue with these tires on my M5.

My experience hasn't been great with ties. I could only find one pic showing the Super Sports' tear at the rim bead. But the tread was chunking heavily as well. There are many more pics online of PSS getting destroyed from track driving.

Having said that, I've chunked Dunlops as well so maybe it's just the way I am driving.

Holy crap I've done 3 days and seen nothing close to that kind of wear. Are you plowing into turns without slowing the car?

I think it's a function of Lime Rock (being all right hand turns, not great camber in my 135i, and maybe my driving style.

I always try to be kind to my tires - monitor to 36 hot psi, get them up to temp before picking up the pace - but inevitably this happens after a few track days. Once at my pace, I do think I overdrive the car a little, so that have a bit to do with it.

I'm hoping that the M2 will be a little better on tire wear overall so this site has been pretty helpful to see what has been working for others. Unfortunately, the sample size is small. At this point, I plan on switching to Michelin Sport Cup 2s and seeing how that goes. But if I keep chewing through tires, it will become economical to just get camber plates and maybe a suspension upgrade.

Ah ok that's on a 1 series. I'm sure there are some differences on the geometry and suspension setup between that car and the M2.

Not saying M2 won't need more negative camber but I haven't seen any chunking like that with stock alignment.

MPSS are great tires but they don't stand up to hard track use. The sidewalls are soft, thus they roll over. This is back from my 235i days.

definitely looks like more negative camber is needed...

Has anyone running Hoosiers or slicks broken any sway bar end links?
