Went to Auto Tuning House Friday and spoke with the guys a while before working on the car.

Started with the downpipe. Straight forward swap of the OEM and Sport Cat. Love the finish of the Downpipe and the fit is spot on, no issues.

Bypass was a whole different story once more.

Will show some pics and then summarize my take on everything.
When we pulled the old Bypass and laid on the ground we measured up the new one against it to see if we found any variances and pics below circle what I found.

Old Bypass you can notice how the end that meets with the car is flat, this is the one that measured 2.75”

The new Bypass sent has a lump here, when I spoke with Fabspeed the first time we discussed all this it was noted that the end tube was supposed to be expanded to 3” to match the OEM piping after being built and before shipping, but this was something apparently not done with the one I initially got, maybe slipped Quality Control process.

During the initial install the mismatch of 2.75” Bypass and 3” OEM caused the clamp to not seat properly and it actually crimped my OEM piping which had to be worked to be able to straighten out. I don’t have pics handy but I believe the shop took a couple. There is a muffler shop in one of the hangers next to ATH but the piping was bent badly and not much could be done by the muffler shop so Will (ATH owner) ended up heating the OEM pipe and opening up with one of those expander tools for piping.

We thought this would take care of the fitment once straightened and new Bypass on but it didn’t. ATH spent hours trying to fit this straight and it wouldn’t fit as expected.

Couple pics showing variances between the old and new bypass can be seen below.

In these following pics the top is the new Bypass, bottom old.

Notice how I lined up the Y joint and you can see the new Bypass has the solder points more towards the outside, it also lacks the Fabspeed label.

When comparing the end portion you can notice the lump on the new one making it match the OEM sizing. Also notice how the old one had three pieces of piping soldered together whereas the new one only has two.

These build variances might be the reason why they still sit a bit low (the shorter hangers I had purchased did not help much, tried and ended up putting back OEMs in), this could also be the reason why the Bypass seems to be shifted towards the passenger side.

Notice the space between tips and inner rear diffuser:

All in all I am happy with the sound but very disappointed in the fit. I do appreciate Fabspeed’s willingness to try to make this work and sending out a new Bypass but my take is that these are still one off’s being built by orders but seeing the variances between both systems it shows the build is nowhere near consistent.

My final take on this (If I had to rate this on a 1-10 scale);

Downpipe:
Finish – 10
Fit – 10
Sound – 10 (Amazing deep sound, very different than just the Bypass)
Price – 7 (Sport Cats are never cheap, but this downpipe does deliver sound and you can feel the power)

Bypass:
Finish – 7 (First one had the Fabspeed Label which was visible from the rear, new one was missing this detail)
Fit – 4 (Only way I see this fitting properly is if you have it placed exactly where you want with an exhaust jig and then have a muffler shop solder it directly to the OEM piping)
Sound – 8 (Bypass itself sounds great, had this setup for a month and a half)
Price – 6 (Previously had rated at a 10 but was before all the issues that went by, took down to a 6 since I would definitely be willing to pay more to have something that fit perfectly)

All in all I disappointed with the fit and finish and it’s mostly due to being so happy about the sound and power change I could feel. Would love to see the fit match the sound and performance.

The car now breaks traction in second gear, before the downpipe the DSC would just let you slip tires for half or one second, now struggles to control the wheel spin for a couple seconds, you can also feel the car pulling nicely.

I will be taking the car to the dyno first week of March and I will be able to see any gains. There are plenty baseline dyno charts floating around, I just want to see where it is after the downpipe.

You my friend have a lot of patience. I've been following this all along and was hoping to hear a happy ending to it. That last picture would literally drive me insane looking down at that

As you said the units appear to be one off, why not get a quality shop to mock you up an exhaust. It would guarantee it actually fitting in all directions (up/down left/right), be literally the same thing, and cheaper.

Just finally chiming in here after a lot of reading. Love your car though and the clean OEM+ theme you have going on

Thanks for following and thank you for dropping a line.

I am still on the fence on what to do with all this but most likely will be trying to fix locally because waiting again for a third Bypass to be built makes no sense. Specially if this could turn into a third scenario where this happens again.

I try to be patient and not get pissed off at stuff like this because this is a hobby and should be something to escape the daily pressures of work and life overall etc..

Friday I spent the whole day with this headache and then around midnight a longtime friend from Georgia arrived and we had a wrenching weekend on my black CRX follwed by an Autocross on Sunday. So all in all it was a great weekend.

Still waiting to hear back from Auto Tuning House regarding a talk with Fabspeed. He took probably like 30 pics during the whole process and seemed very frustrated with the system being such a pain.

Will and Matt from Auto Tuning House have done everything in their hands to make me happy and I appreciate them putting in the work. I recommend them strongly to anyone looking to get their BMW worked on.

I will most like end up spending $ to have this connected to the car straight and permanently.

If I had the option to return and get my money back and go for another system I would most likely do it.

Another person from the forum will be installing this same system on their M2 as soon as they take delivery, hopefully they dont go thru my same pains with it.

Finally THANKS for the props on the car! I love this thing, will update during the week with some Autocross videos

Haven't spoke with Fabspeed about options, really don't know where to go with all this. Was waiting for the communication between Auto Tuning House and Fabspeed to happen.

Time is money, and I decided to pick a shop an hour and a half away from me to ensure I was in good hands, so that means me taking time off work to head over and get work done on the car. And given all the headaches it means taking multiple hours off.

Thanks for the PM. The expanded bulge on the FSpeed's end to mate up with OEM now makes sense. It went out without that quality step. Quite a bit of hours and effort on something so simple. Glad there is seemingly no exhaust leak now--now that ends lap up properly to clamp. The web site pics show an immaculate install on their mule. It would not take but a small jig mistake for weld process to, yes line up with OEM, but be off at diffuser--as hangers are already welded in place and "V" weld angle is set. The main pipes are not going to go any wider, BUT, perhaps ATH can make some adjustment. More time on the clock-- but you would be pleased, am sure.

You have been indeed patient with it. There are several others of us who have followed this and are interested. As someone said to me, am wondering if FS can now guarantee fit and placement in weld up process.

Glad you like the downpipe. You've got almost 3K in parts and shipping to get here -- not to mention your time.

I'm glad ATH was able to stop the exhaust leak, took some effort to get the OEM piping to be round once more after it got mangled by the mismatch of the bypass and the clamp. I agree with you, a slight move on the JIG could throw all off, but seeing the differences between these two systems I had at hand at the same time it seems like these are not consistent. More adjustments might help, not sure how much play I can have with the hangers to get them to line up in the center of the diffuser. It was close to 8pm that night so we called it quits.

I know many people are looking into this, I have received PMs and questions from couple people here regarding all this.

Like I said, love the sound and feel, just highly disappointed with the fit and finish.

From day one I asked about this system, I always wondered why not have the mid pipe also made, that way it would be all plug and play directly from the downpipe to the Muffler Bypass.

Perhaps that would be a solution to ensure proper fit, having the Muffler Bypass connected to a fabricated mid pipe from them also, but none has been developed.

Closest thing is the Dinan Resonator Delete I believe.

Spoke with ATH Friday around midday, told me they would be calling me. Haven't heard from them yet.

Spoke with Fabspeed today and they are working on some details in-house to ensure the Bypass fits perfectly. Hopefully they will roll out some details later on with their approach either here or in their Exhaust Suite topic.

Couple other updates I had pending but work has been hectic the last weeks and had not been able to sit and summarize.

Did my second Autocross couple weekends ago.

Used the BMW Analyser and it worked well this time around! I had emailed them about the misread from last event and they apparently had a glitch with the app in which it stopped recording mid way. The video above was done with the latest update they pushed out.

Car feels great, I need a lot of seat time to learn how to push it around harder.

Great videos! I'm looking forward to more as you hit more track days. By any chance, do you have anyone that can film you from the outside of the car? Or maybe even set up your camera by the exhaust for one of the runs? That would definitely be some killer footage.

Keep having too much fun!

Was limited on camera placement on the dyno, will load the video I got.

Possibly next cars and coffee I will get some cameras on the car with external microphones to get some footage.

Went to a local dyno day on Saturday.. local car group that does events every now and then.

Place was Trick Pro Motorsports, about 7 cars were lined up on the rollers. They are using a Super Flow Dyno which is relatively new to me since I am mostly accustomed to Dynojet or Mustang Dyno's.

Had read online that they tend to yield on the lower side but surprisingly I believe this one was on the higher end of the spectrum. Car currently is not tuned and only power adder is a Fabspeed Motorsport Sport Cat Downpipe which is advertised to bump power over stock about 16whp and 40lb-ft of torque. Most baseline runs on stock M2's lay down between 330-340whp and 370-380lb-ft of torque.

Being that said my final numbers were 380whp and 415lb-ft of torque.

For reference my friend ran his stock 2016 Mustang 5.0 and laid down 412whp and 393tq which to be completely stock is also showing a high reading.

Will try to baseline on a Dynojet in the next months to compare.

The torque numbers seem to be right there. We had a 418tq reading on the M2 we had. The horsepower seems to be a little high. But all-in-all it looks like the car is definitely performing much better with the Sport Cat!

Thats a given.. stock the car with DSC on would barely break traction shifting from 1st to 2nd.. after the downpipe y breaks the tires loose on that shift with DSC so its enough power to make the DSC struggle a bit to grab them again

Haven't updated in a while. Office has been hectic last couple months..

Had another Dyno Day yesterday but this time on a Dyno Jet Dyno. Numbers were more realistic, will post some videos once I edit this week.

358whp and 407tq not bad for a 90 degree day down in Florida.

Also did another Autocross today, car behaved very well. Starting to get a handle on how it behaves compared to my last track car.

Will update with some more vids during the weekend.

Just a quick update on the Fabspeed Motorsport Bypass fitment situation. I have formally requested a refund as of Wednesday this week. I understand it has been escalated to Management and I should have a resolution on Monday.
