Comparison video of M2 ASD (active sound) on/off

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
I coded out ASD today and took a before and after video. Not helped that it was raining and car still be run-in so wasn't maxing it.

Inside, it is a lot quieter without ASD overlaying that artificial tone. You can hear induction, turbo and exhaust as you go through the rev range - and it sounds good, natural even!

When you put ASD back on, it does sound really artificial and kicks in above 3k revs, yet its surprising how quickly you get used to it again.

The GoPro sound isn't great, think i need to get an open case or external mic. May even try again with my iPhone again tomorrow. You can still hear the difference with ASD above 3/4 revs...

I think i will be leaving ASD off, especially as the stock exhaust is so good, and can now be heard inside.i

Thanks for posting. I'm going to wait til my exhaust is finished, then I'll decide whether to code it out or not.

Thanks for the video! Great comparison and definitely has me considering the bypass cable.

Thanks for posting, quite a noticeable difference, i may just pull the fuse to hear the difference myself ( i know i'll lose the stereo as well but it will just be a short term experiment) and then look into getting the bypass cable.

Cheers .

yes really worth doing if you can't code it out. The bypass cable is cheap too.

Yeah, ASD really does sound artificial after turning it off. Well worth pulling that fuse for a 5 min test. Which fuse is it out of Interest?

Thank you for putting this ASD & no-ASD compilation together. Do you have a write-up how to code it out?

I'm really not sure I care too much either way. Active sound doesn't bother me

Great service to the community with this post. Thank you.
As much as I love most all things BMW, I really don't like ASD on M cars. I hope it goes away in the future much like fake air scoops on hoods went away.

i read somewhere that active sound helps drivers associate the sound with the rev of the engine, assisting in hitting certain notes at shift points along the rev band. "auditory memory" or like "muscle memory," if you will.

NA engines makes it very noticeable to hear the engine and know the revs, and to shift without having to bounce off the rev limiter. FI engines do not have the same crescendo.

this is why bmw, porsche, etc have sound inducted into the speakers of turbo cars.

ASD never bothered me much so keeping it on is fine with me.

There is a difference between playing a pre-recorded soundtrack through the stereo (BMW), and amplifying natural intake and engine noises through a symposia (Porsche).

Free revving is a problem though that only ASD can solve on these motors. Rev matching just sounds like shit.

I like Jag's approach; just make the exhaust louder. <3

I agree, ASD doesnt bother me enough to say I need to code it so I can be more in touch with the car. I think it actually sounds good. Its not for every one I guess.
