Well I mean in the dry, on smooth pavement with a near race setup and wide sticky tires.. in other words what I end up doing with all of my daily drivers lol. I'm running square 255/40-18 tires, Springs, sway bars etc. on my Beetle and it takes some pretty aggressive driving for it to unstick at all. The Jetta (Bora) would oversteer like a rear driver with the rear bar on full stiff. I find it plenty fun because it takes more skill to do well. Conversely, I find the oversteer in my LS400 (RWD) race car just annoying, and I keep dialing back the rear spring rate to reduce it; It does have a far more sophisticated suspension than the M2 though. I guess I just like a wide variety of cars for their own reasons. Looks like an M2 is not in my future now due to the long wait times to get one but I'm looking forward to picking up my R8 on Saturday though.

So my app launched and in the first month we've gotten more than 1,000 registered users and we have 8 different offers from eco-tours to personalized romantic dinners to creative brunches...

BUT.

My currect car started squeaking, took it to pep boys for a quick fix. Estimate came in at $2,864 LOL. (Its a Civic 2006 sedan with 150k miles) So it seems I will be forced to trade it in and buy a cheap, slightly used 2015 Mustang V6 and then get a used M2 or TT RS after I get my MBA in 3 years.

RIP.

Well, that's not quite right. Only some of them are transverse like the A3 and some of the cute-utes. Most of the rest have longitudinal engine mounting like any rear driver. Most of the modern Audis handle similarly to AWD BMWs. The difference is all but meaningless on the street, and preference is more about history, personal bias or other factors that affect purchasing decisions. I'm by no means trying to convince you, just challenge your assumptions. BMW makes great cars - I'll be at the museum for a visit in Munich in June. There's room in the tent for all the good stuff, and BMWs are better in some ways, and Audi's (or Mercedes etc) are better in other ways.

^^ Exactly, the majority of Audi are still longitudinal, the TT (ironic, since it's the most "sports car" Audi makes below the R8) and the A/S/RS3 are the exceptions.... maybe the Q3 is transverse as well but who cares, it's an SUV.

The longitudinal Audis are still "rear-biased" AWD too, with a torsen diff.

However, rumor has it that they are going to be moving to more Haldex systems in the future, partially because they want something that will allow them to completely decouple the rear *and* the propshaft for MPG savings...

Easy changes, givea you an excuse to fully wrap the car in an exotic and different color

yep, that call that Quattro "Ultra".. those get better mileage, but are basically FWD where the rear only kicks in when traction is low, like Honda's old "Real Time" AWD. They will offer both flavors for a while, but I think the electric revolution is coming a lot faster than people realize. A couple more cycles and coventional cars will be the exception not the rule.

BMWs are born with a front engine + rwd platform to start with.
A1-A6 are front engine fwd as their base setup.
Transferse and longitudinal engines is indeed a difference but their engines are still 'over the frontbumper', just like the 5 pot Urquattro-GrB-S1 etc.

Haldex is evolving but not the 'best buy'.

I'm not trying to convince you but etc etc etc etc ....

In bold: Design. Traction(BMW rwd vs Quattro doh) and that's about it.

Enjoy your beautiful R8!

Cheers

I pick up at 1pm tomorrow! Can't wait!

Oh, BTW, Haldex is only on the transverse cars like your A3 or the TT. My A4's all were longitudinal engine mounting with a Torsen mechanical center diff, and not haldex. The Torsen diff could be had with multiple different bias settings not just 50/50. That's not by way of arguement, just informational

By the way, within the mustang budget there could be a used 2014 228i.

It's faster than the mustang and feels much better inside. The only thing that worries me is that maintenance is only covered up to 36k miles.

How much do you guys spend in maintenance that is not covered? On the flipside, used BWMs are fully under warranty until 50 or 100k miles.

Have any of you driven the 228i? They say it's pretty good because it is 200 pounds lighter than the 235, but, is there any major turbo lag like the Audi TT?

Test drove the 228i today and its great! The engine feels way better than the TT, cabin is great and a 2014 model costs 26,000! Most have 20k miles before warranty expires too.

The only issue is maintenance :/

But really enjoyed driving it.

Nice! I've got a 235i at the moment, and it's like a go-kart. I know the 228's got less power, but it's also got less weight - I'd imagine the two would cancel each other out, or at least come close.

There's a nice Road & Track article comparing the 228, 235, M2, and 1M and original E30 as well.

11.6 @ 121 is an insane 1/4 mile time for a stock TTRS, and the RS3 is even less money with the same engine.

...The laptimes as well, wow.

Great new video, short though. The Audi's body control surprised me.
