Has anyone tracked their car...and
If you have tracked it, can you compare it to your other past track experiences.
I am particularly interested in brake wear and fade. Also- how do you fare compared to other cars in your run groups. |

I haven't tracked an M2 yet (I have a week 17 production and expect to take delivery sometime late May or early June). However, I have considerable experience tracking a 135i, which I would expect to have similar mannerisms to the M2 and maybe a good reference point. Regarding brakes, I think with good pads and fluid, there shouldn't be any fade during a 25 minute session. I ran Ferodo 2500 and Hawk HP+, on ECS slotted rotors with Motul and never experienced fade in the 135i. Regarding pace, I was running 1:03s at Lime Rock and 1:54s at Palmer. I expect the M2 to have even stronger brakes and at a minimum, 1-2 seconds a lap faster. Hope this helps. |

That is helpful. If you were getting the 135 around at 1:02 you are a very competent driver. I was doing :58 in my Porsche 993 Turbo a few years ago. Can't wait to get back on track. What organization did you do these events? HPDE/NASA? Or a BMW club?
Thanks |

I have typically run with BMWCCA, CT Valley and Patroon. If you're not familiar with their events, they put together a good day that is well organized with a focus on safety. I've also run with SCDA and a few other minor clubs when I'm feeling the need to get back out there.

Overcooking your brakes is not necessarily a sign of driving "hard" or setting a fast pace. Getting on the brakes hard and coming off quickly and smoothly is a much better approach and helps keep temps lower. For the record, LRP is not hard on brakes, especially with 20 minute sessions and my star spec street tires. |

I did my first track event this past weekend at NJMP and it was great. Car is completely stock and to be honest the best way to tell you the correct answer is all depends the way you drive. If you have had previous track days I recommend you buy some track pads or else going with OEM pads is fine. Even after a whole track day, my brakes are in good shape. I am able to tell the difference, but again the brake pads are fine and I am not worried about them failing on me.
p.s. I drove to the track and back home with no issues. Hopefully this answers your question. |

Helpful - thanks
I would stick to Stock for now...I dont make money on the track...so a few seconds wont hurt. Does BMW replace pads/rotors for free under the maintenance plan? |

I have about a dozen track days on my 2017 DCT...at Road Atlanta, Sebring, Barber and AMP. I ran a track prepped C5Z before and run in the red/instructor group. I have also had a couple of pro drivers take me around RA and Sebring in this car.My conclusion is that this car is freaking amazing....you can run very respectable times in any run group. Obviously the GT3, GTR, Z06 crowd is faster, but only if they know how to drive...passed a McLaren and GT3 at Sebring. I have run camber plates , Carbotech pads (XP10/12) since day 1 along with Motul , SS brake lines, and brake ducts. The brakes are as good as any I have used, including my racing brakes on the corvette....no fade with this set up. You can drive it to the track on stock equipment and drive it home , but I feel the brake pad/fluid upgrade is a must. I have tracked it with stock wheel/tires and with 18 square on 265 RE71s ( after installing MP coilovers) the later is about 4 seconds faster. Also tried some 275 square scrubs and got another couple of seconds. This car really does it all...from mild to wild. Can't wait to drive the CS version !!

Amen (Track brake pads and race brake fluid a must. Stickier tires highly, highly recommended. Otherwise, a fantastic weekender track car that takes you home in comfort too! P.S.- The chassis is so good on this car. Every time I peek under the car and see the sub-frame bolted directly to frame with no spongy bushing in between, I get excited. This coupled with the fantastic limited slip diff makes a huge leap forward in chassis dynamics from many of the past M designs, and yes the difference IS very distinguishable on the track. Great car!) |

Do not have any track feedback to offer on the M2 yet, will soon. Will be doing my first day completely stock to just see how everything stock M is for myself. From pretty spirited country / mountain driving, I can say the M2 does everything much much easier and better than my 335is, even with all the suspension work. The most noticeable key points to me are turn-in and all around stability. The car is amazing!
