Which dealership? Thanks!

...what oil does the owners manual call for?

I'd like to change it at about the 200 mile mark to get that initial run-in oil out of the engine and have some nice fresh oil in there for the next 1000 or so up to the break-in service but there seems to be a lot of ambiguity as to what the manufacture is recommending?

I believe it calls for OW-30 LL-01 from responses I have gotten but part of the ambiguity is that you can in fact use several LL-01s without an issue.

While I respect the manual, it is a static document and sometimes thing change. For example, the 1M was the first Turbo M model so the manual said to use the 5W-30 that came in the 135i, but years later when every M car is Turbo, they came out with M 0W-40. In all fairness, LL01 5W-40 and 0W-40 was listed as a possible option, but you get my point I hope?

My 1M manual said my car had a high performance V8, because it was a small project and they reused parts of the e90 M3 manual and someone forgot to edit it. The BMW website said that the 1M had a dual disk clutch. It was finally corrected when I met with the head of M sales in Garching. I pointed it out. It was really a lightened dual mass flywheel which got translated to dual disk clutch.

You will be fine with 0W-30 and I applaud you for mechanical empathy and changing the oil for break-in. You are part of an ever shrinking group of people in the Post Truth society that still retain some common sense.

Best wishes and enjoyment in your awesome ride!

Not about project being small or big, F80/82 are having High Performance V8 too according to manual.

Lol! I thought ok for small 1M project but F80 too? That's nuts. : ). Wonder if same person doing the editing?

I am due for my first service, and after reading this entire thread, I think that if one does not drive in colder climates then 5W-40 may be the best choice. Now I need to see what the dealer stocks and is wiling to use. Thanks to nachob for all of his insight and determination here.

Thank you. That was my conclusion . San Diego is warm and 5w-40 seems best for our cars. BMW has now discontinued 0W-40 M oil so next change will probably back to pennzoil euro platinum 5w-40 for me. Congrats and great ride!

I'll let you all continue to debate the merit of this type of stuff - location, used by Ferrari... My recommendation to all on this thread remains to change frequently with approved LL01 oil as per my owners manual. It's cheap insurance.
The manual specifies BMW LL-01 FE (see post 31). I assume this is the European Formula. It goes on to say that up to 1 liter of BMW LL-01 or API SL or superior oil can be added if BMW LL-01 FE is not available.

I haven't seen BMW LL-01 FE spec'd oil for sale in the US (is it?). Is it okay to do a complete change with non-FE even though the manual indicates that only 1 liter maximum should be used?

Edit: FE is "Fuel Efficiency".

Yes, I have the same question. This won't be an issue while under the 4 year service program and I can top up in between with "regular" LL-01 but what LL-01 FE options are available at retail stores (in North America)?

I have only seen the non "FE" LL-01 available here in the US and most every dealer and independent stocks the TwinPower Turbo 0W-30 for the N55 motor. The "up to 1 liter" comment in the manual doesn't make that much sense if the dealers, at least in NA, are adding 7 or 8 liters during an oil service.

I should have taken a picture at the dealer...but I saw they had normal "BMW Twin Power" (0w-30 I believe) and BMW M Twin Turbo Power" oil (10w-60 I believe - is this the old Castrol TWS oil?)

I'm assuming the 0w-30 is good for the N55 right?

As far as I can tell the 0W-30 and the 5W-30 don't have the "M" on the label. Probably just marketing BS and/or updated labeling? Neither list the FE anywhere that I can see.

Yes, 0W-30 is specified for the N55 motor, but read back through this thread in detail to capture what some are saying about the 0W spec relative to oil usage and climate temperatures.

I really should have taken a picture of the different oil...I'm pretty sure one was 10w-60...

Are the E90 or Fxx M cars running that?

Motul has many different types of oils.

8100 X-Max
8100 X-Clean
Motul sport ester
Motul Specific

All these oils come up under M2 on their site.

I think the 8100 X-Max is the way to go? What are people buying that are changing oil themselves? I usually change the oil myself half way
(or sooner) before the free dealer changes.

First service completed on 16 June. The oil used by the dealer is pictured. This is a very good oil and one they use for the M2. This oil is quite easily found near me in Germany.

Oil Viscosity

Regarding oil viscosity on these engines, since BMW has spec'd oil as heavy as 10W-60 in the S65 V-8 (E9X M3), they aren't afraid to sacrifice fuel economy for outright protection...IF the engine is designed for that particular viscosity. According to an engine builder I know that does work on BMWs and other high performance engines, there is an enormous dependency on oil for valvetrain sensors, hydraulic operation, etc...even the oil capacity is measured by passing the oil through a spectral sensor at elevated RPM. All of this is dependent on the viscosity for flow characteristics, proper pressure at certain RPMs, etc.

I'd stick w/the 0W-30, w/the highest quality group IV synthetic you can buy (Redline, Motul, Royal Purple, etc.) and change it often.

Any oil analysis results out there by anyone on the M2 N55?
