Port Installed Accessories

My car has officially gone into production status and I am starting to consider how cost affect having accessories installed at port are versus doing myself.

Specifically I am looking to purchase the black kidneys and black fender 'vents'.

Any feedback on those that have already researched this?

Port install is cheaper but you don't get to keep your original parts. Other than that, not much difference tbh.

I'm all for that, as long as there is a cost savings... I'll have to see how challenging those side 'vents' are though.

My dealer wants to charge $410 for port installed black kidney grills whereas I think you can buy them direct from BMW for $320. So there is a little money to be saved.

Option 1) $410 for port install black grilles or Option 2) $120 to order 235 black grilles and swap out the outer piece yourself? I went with Option 2, no brainer

For the black side gills, easiest install ever! Probably took me like 2 minutes to swap them out plus you save money!

It's settled then. Thanks!

I actually just discovered IND as well, so have a feeling they are going to be getting quite a bit of my money soon.

I had port install grills and gils. Did a great job. A few hundred bucks isn't much on a 55k car. IMO
Also I got a discount off MSRP.

I got the stainless steel pedals installed at port, I didn't want to drill holes in my pedals myself.

I totally agree. I ordered the front and side grills port installed. I want the car to arrive with those parts on, looking absolutely beautiful, and ready to go. Yes, an extra $640 for all the grills installed but I know I won't have skinned knuckles, frustration, or broken parts. And on a $55K car... again, totally agree, won't really notice it. (My wife will, but she'll get over it!)

Actually, I had ordered the car with the front grills only but this past weekend was at Lime Rock Park for the IMSA races; BMW USA had a big display including an M2 all decked out with M Performance parts and I realized then that my Alpine white car with black front grills but chrome side grills would look silly. Made the decision to add side grills easy.

LOL I installed them without getting any battle scars.

You also get the satisfaction you installed them yourself, something to be proud of

Holes must be drilled to apply? No holes there to bolt for easier instillation?

You don't need to, comes pre-drilled and ready to go. Here they are in my car, well worth the $195 CDN.

Why can't you keep the removed parts? Do the installers tend to damage them during removal and BMW wants to avoid customer complaints?

I'm not sure the reason, but they don't come back with the car, which is disappointing.

For example, I had the CF diffuser installed at my dealer and got to keep the original. If this was done at port I wouldn't get the original back...

Maybe someone can shed more light on why.

Port installed accessories are covered by the BMW 4-year warranty whereas dealer installed accessories are only cover by a 2-year warranty.

Anyways, I would not want the original parts because it would cluster my garage and I would never go to the stock anyways IMHO.

Looks great!

What I meant was, is the pedals in the car drilled for the M petal covers? Do I need my power drill to drill anything or just a screwdriver/ratchet wrench?

Did I say they look great?

Guessing b/c of the logistics and b/c things like the exhaust (or other large items) don't fit in the trunk, but most likely b/c it's a PITA?

Sorry to jump in here.

Curious as to when do you typically request the accessories you would like installed at port? At what stage of the ordering process?

Currently have a build scheduled for some time in August. Should I have already requested the accessories or is it really anytime before the car reaches the states?

Thanks.
