FWP need help on M2
Would I be crazy to sell a GT4, and Golf R for an M2? I love the GT4 it's a very special car. But I want something I can enjoy daily without the associated costs etc. The GolfR in my opinion is really boring, and uninspiring. I think the M2 would be the best Track/Daily car out there on the market right now.
I think I recall seeing a few folks here with the GT4 and M2. Any input? I know some guys will say "keep both" but in this move I'd like to reduce the amount of money I'm spending on cars. |

Yes you would. Golf R isn't a bad car and has lots of utility and GT4 blows both away in driver experience. You'd save a ton of money though if you consolidated.

I'm surprised about all the Golf R love. The dual clutch box is not good. Shift programming is probably the worst I've had. The engine sounds boring, and the steering is very numb. I've owned AWD cars before (RS4, S4, wrx, ttrs) all were much more fun and had more character. The golf is quick sure, but soul stirring it's not. The older VR6 based Rs were great cars.
Anyway i think the M235i is a better car than the R for feel/fun. Since I liked that car I figured the M2 would be just what the doctor ordered. If I was willing to dig the hole deeper the M2 + the GT4 would be the ideal pair, but that violates the whole downsizing idea. I've never owned a car I liked as much as the GT4, well maybe my old '02 M Coupe. (which yeah I shouldn't have sold) Anyway thanks for the input. |

What about either keep the GT4 and add an RS3 (if you need AWD) or consolidate down to a TTRS?

yes you are crazy if you sell the GT4.
get rid of the GOLF, buy something else. 228i?235i? But if you can only have one car. M2 is one of the best choices out there.

I had a Boxster S & 1M, then sold the Porsche thinking I wouldn't miss it ...
I was wrong. I can understand wanting to downsize and if that's needed then only having an M2 is an excellent compromise. But be prepared to have that burning desire to get another Porsche, I know I'm still looking. I think you'll miss the GT4, but no reason you can't go back to one later on if need be. |

Ridiculous!
How did you get a GT4 without a rough idea of its maintenance cost? GT4 is a perfectly balanced car, leagues above m2 in term of handling. But if you like a more active rear end, m2 is the one for you, just don't you think oversteer(comparatively lack of rear grip) is any indication of superior handling - Merc did tons of that. Sure oversteer is commonly perceived as fun to drive, which leads to a weird conclusion - sporty cars aren't the funniest form of cars to drive, because mid/rear mounted engine makes it harder to control when rear wheels go spinning. Just drop your ridiculous idea of downgrading to m2, or at least get a good idea of what the maintenance cost difference between the two first.

What are the running costs on a GT4, that would be over and above a M2 ?
Please don tell me you have bugger all miles on it because you cant afford to run it and worry about depreciating it |

running cost of the GT4 is not that expensive - for any car that is tracked, it just depends on the number of days at the track per month/year; more days equals higher cost. I suspect that the M2 when tracked cost just as much as the GT4, or at least close to it
the SC2s last about 25 heat cycles. a track day yields 4-5 sessions. so think 5-6 track days to blow a set of tires. really no big deal; yes, oil, brake fluid and pads too, but all at much longer intervals. |

Hard question as we cannot look into your mind: you know best what you appreciate most about cars and where your priorities lie.
Basically I would also recommend to keep the GT4, but if that car doesn't fit your purposes (anymore), then it's wise to consider parting ways. Make a list of what you like and dislike about the cars, your pros and cons of each car. And award a score weight (more points to win/lose for what matters more to you). The final result may get you a better idea. And if you disagree with the score, then try to find out why + decide accordingly. Try to assess the risk of regretting your decision: if high, then think again.

So my cousin finally picked up his GT4, it had been sitting at the dealer for quite some time but he just couldn't get there to take delivery. Took it for a spin this past weekend. I'd have a VERY hard time ever parting with that car.

Not sure I agree with you on the assumption that the M2 will get expensive once the warranty expires. My experience with BMW's has actually not been bad. I have 215,000 miles on my E90 and its still going strong. I will find out first hand on the M2 as I drive 25,000 miles a year so by year 3 I will be without a warranty safety net. Didn't have any problems with my E90 between a wheel bearing at 48,000 miles and a AC compressor at 170,000 miles. Hoping for the same good luck with the M2

If your e90 Was a turbo model I am honestly shocked you haven't had an electric fuel pump failure, valve cover screws broken and big leak, premature idler failures or leaking turbo oil line. If it was not a turbo model then that is really not comparable to the m2 which is More complex. For one the m2 is direct injected high compression and high boost. It uses an electric rack which is fairly new and untested. It uses a fairly recent cylinder liner process where material is welded onto the block not an iron sleeve. It has a pretty complicated rear differential and idrive. I'm on my 4th BMW and 123k miles is my highest mileage and I have already had to deal with a clutch shudder at 28k, water pump plastic impeller failures, plastic expansion tanks that crack, 3 fuel pumps replaced in both e46s at 88k and 118k and 1M fuel pump at 10k miles! Several window regulators and a radio in my e46 that when it went bad nothing in the interior worked until it was replaced! Windows stopped moving, flashers quit working, sunroof, locks all because the radio took a dump. 3 of my 4 BMWs have had their High or low Pressure fuel pumps replaced and the one that still has the original pump only has 16k miles. I love these cars and they give me enough enjoyment to cover the high maintenance costs but I go into it with eyes open. Since you mentioned that high operating costs were a concern, that is why I mentioned that once warranty is out you might actually have higher costs than you realize. |
