I will investigate because I'm not 100% sure but in Portugal if you specify comfort access on a M135i for example, your key is the third one instead of blue...

Maybe it's geographic? Mine does too. In the US. Maybe it's related to an option package?

Panic button usually means alarm system option which is standard on the M2 in the US market

I'm in the US. My 328i and X6 both have the alarms and neither have the dedicated panic button. You hold down the trunk release for panic. I would like a panic button because I often set it off trying to open the trunk.

2015 228xi has the red surround because of the sport package. Yes you can change it to different colors or wrap it.

The alarm is also standard on Aus cars.
I've got the little red blinking light under the rear view mirror when the car's locked and it's described in the owner's manual.

Not sure about others but I've never used the panic button before. Perhaps it's more a US thing.

How does one get these other colors? Would it work with the standard M2 fob - I.e. The "plain" silver surround? Thanks.

Still no response to my question about programming an M (X5/6M) fob to our cars. I guess this isn't possible?

Different models have different fobs so you can't really. I believe you can buy the insert itself though, but have to say, the m perf keycase is awesome.

No it's not possible. Each key is ordered by vin number only. You would have to get an X6 or X5 vin. NEED license and registration that matches the vin...

I agree with the comments that BMW needs to redesign and modernize their fobs. The M2 fob is essentially the same as my 06 E90, the x5M key fob looks awesome, I suspect that is a direction they will go eventually.
