While it will be a cool car, I agree that if produced it will only be for halo car purposes. "Regular" enthusiasts will never be able to own one - if not for the cost, the fact that the limited production run will be sold out long before the cars are built.

I'd rather put the S65 NA V8 from the e9x M3 into the M2, for that price.
A lighter weight M2 with all that turbo power would actually make for a worse car. But a light weight M2 with a slightly more powerful NA engine would make for the absolute perfect drivers car. Not interested in the S55.

BTW - Looks like we have had a very similar ///M history. E36, E39, E86, E92 I wouldn't be interested at 2X the price.

Probably out of my price range.
Dack, what are you hearing about a possible 4 door M2?

I know an M4 GTS at a BMW dealer in my country that has not been sold yet as we speak (still in the showroom).

I just have two questions.
1. Will it be faster than an M4 GTS on the track? 2. If yes, then how much faster? To me, it's just not worth it to spend $120,000+ (not including market adjustment) on a 2 series if it's not spectacular on the track. The key word is spectacular! Because a slightly used with very low miles Porsche 911 GT3 is $140,000. BMW should instead work on a CSL with the S55 and light weight improvements, and sell it for an MSRP of $80,000 - 85,000. This way they don't have to limit it as much and they will get more people buying it. Which means more profit for BMW.

There is no way BMW would put the S55 engine in a M2 GTS.
BMW did not want the M2 to compete with the M4 and therefor didn't put the same engine in the M2, so why would they do it with the M2 GTS, to compete with the M4 GTS. Just like Porsche "de-tunes" the Cayman vs the 911, so will BMW with the M2 vs the M4. MY 02 cents is that this article is bogus and just there to sell magazines. BMW might make a hot rod M2 version, but it won't be all out crazy like the M4 GTS. Who is going to pay 120k for a M2? |

... let's be real, will it have ///M mirrors though?
I'm kidding, don't freak out. This is pretty much a permanent fucking high five, news wise, even if it's just a rumor. Future Thread Title: Pure Stage 2 M2 GTS 650rwhp + ///M Mirrors. #winning

A M2 GTS, hm, i like the idea.
I think BMW M should make more unique cars. We have the basic M2, M3, M4 - but then there should be a CSL and a GTS. But not limited to 100 cars, should be a second digit, like a 1000 cars at least. But the focus from the next generation M should be on the M2 from now. The M3/4 is just to big, M2 should be the primary M, optional with X-drive, and add another 20% more power. 😀 Also with a manual, and make a smaller Z convertible and coupe.

On a serious note, I think you've got a great point; however isn't the S65 meaningfully heavier than the S55? I honestly can't recall, but judging by your appreciation for NA, hoping you'd know.

Base - comp pack - GTS - CSL My theory is as follows: The M2 GTS will be faster than the M4 GTS, because once the m2 GTS is out the M4 GTS will be over 2 years old and the M4 CSL will be on the cusp of production. Leaving the m2 GTS with the "fastest BMW" title for only a short period of time PS: Reading these comments I really don't get how much you guys are die hard manual fans and absolutely refuse to buy a DCT car. It's like even if the m2 GTS car was $1 more than an M2 but only DCT some of you guys wouldn't touch it (disclaimer: I drive a manual car)
