What if you turn the headlights into the "ON" position and just leave them there? Does that help at all?

Picture taken yesterday right before the camera could focus and adjust the light. Hard to capture with a camera, but in reality it's sometimes pretty dark above the OBC:

Speedometer and rev-counter (+ needles) readable ? Yes.

Comfortable to read (especially with sun glasses) ? No.

You won't see such poor readability of instrument dials happening on modern cars of BMW's competitors (Porsche, Audi, Mercedes, etc.).

I asked my dealer to report this issue to BMW. He did and BMW replied to him that I wasn't the first to point it out - BMW knows about it.

BMW should address this, definitely.

IMHO it`s also the light sensor working fairly late on bad weather situations, so no adequate dash lights. Furthermore there are no rear lights working that way, that IMHO is not advisable for safety reasons !

Of course the daylight angel eyes are pretty bright, but I honestly think the sensor is reacting to late.

A light sensor that triggers more early could have solved some problems on the dash lightning.

I noticed this yesterday when driving under a canopy of trees. Could not see the speedometer and rev counter at all! Neither the gauges or the needles were visible. I am sure they could activate all of the instrument lighting as soon as the engine is on like many other cars I have driven?

LCI will address this....

HUD option.

Kidding no HUD will happen on F87.

Does seem a genuine problem, doubt it will e resolved prior to September builds too.

Damn.

Honestly it's pathetic they overlooked such an important human-machine interface. Imagine what would have happened if this issue was in an airplane cockpit? Engineering director dropped the ball completely. They talk about "i" future vehicles no stop yet they miss such a basic yet important function on a $50K+ car. They need to fix this immediately!

I'm pretty surprised they didn't notice this while testing. Don't they log thousands of miles prior to production approval? It's not like they save money by leaving the backlight off during the daytime.

This is my biggest gripe on my M2, as others have said it's ridiculous and a safety issue as i often find myself spending longer than normally necessary looking at the dash trying to figure out what speed I'm doing, I've now taken to just looking at the digital display but the readout is pretty small as we know.

Tbh i don't think it's a huge improvement with the orange backlight during the day, it really needs to be lit in white.
Could BMW fix this on already delivered cars? Surely it would take more than just coding as I doubt the dash has a white backlight already.

On most modern cars, the digital speedometer is permanently visible + big readout.

BMW has to take a closer look into how the competition listens to its (potential) customers.

BMW used to be leading on dash lay out, on putting bio mechanics into the best car ergonomics.

The emphasis here is ; USED TO BE..............

It`s a rather disappointing but true conclusion.

In the past there was no brand what so ever who made a dash like BMW, wel, those days are gone.....

My previous Cayman GTS had an outstanding dash, outstanding lay out, outstanding readability, outstanding dash lights, like the above GT4 dash Artemis posted, just great overal !

M2 dash layout still is alright, it's the lighting that sucks...

I guess I'll ask my question another way, only the M2's instrument cluster requires daytime illumination?

Could be interesting for coders. This 2012 thread reports about the following codes (http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=662851):
  • KOMBI->3007 KI_Dimmung, 24->DIM_NACHT_EIN->Werte=FF (night dimming parameter)
    ("DIM_NACHT_AUS"= Night Mode | "DIM_NACHT_EIN" = Day Mode)
  • KOMBI-->3000 Anzeige_Konfiguration-->HINTERGRUND_FARBE_TAG-->Grau or Orange (white or orange instrument cluster lighting)
But those are possibly not applicable to the F87 M2 ?

Recently had a loaner F10 528i and it also did not have daytime dash backlight. The back ground was black, the dials and lettering were white so the contrast was better but still a bit hard to read when comparing to an always on white backlight like on VAG cars.

Personally I don't consider this a deal breaker, just a nuisance. It's just one of the quirky little things that I've come to tolerate with the ownership of German cars if they can improve it, great, if not...

Sounds like an area for BMW to capitalize. M-Performance gauges with backlit white lights. Only $1400. Haha.

In all seriousness, it's not a huuugge issue, however I do notice it when the sun is going down and I'm under an area with lots of tree cover or a bridge. It is pretty annoying until the lights kick on from the sensor. All in all, I would hope this issue is being addressed in some way.

Another reason why this car needed a HUD.

It's not a backlight issue although that could help solve the problem. All BMWs I've owned to date including e36, 46, 82, 84, and 90 have a solid black background with solid white lettering = very high contrast. The M2 has a dark titanium with silver/white lettering = much less contrast. They could either change to their tried and true formula or mess with the backlighting which frankly still won't fully fix the problem (turn on the lights and see for yourself).
