I just checked as well on my E93 M3. I'm 28 miles away from home and it shows my car at my home address. The app works well for what it is. I'm also able to send map items from my iPhone to the car navigation system. There are some additional items available through the app but have not tried it yet. For a free app it seams to work well.

Edit: Connected will also get you the last mile of driving so in fact it may just show you where the vehicle was last when it registewed with the BMW's gps server? I know for a fact that BMW Remote will send a signal to the car and when it connects it tells you were it is. If it cannot connect, i.e in Artemis's Bunker !, it will tell you no connection.

Another good tracking option is Geosavi. (Geosavi.com). Either OBD plugin or hardwired.

Just make sure, if you are in NA, you have the new app released mid August. It has both connected and remote capability. It's not an upgrade, it's a new app. Icon shown below.
