MY2017 M2's iDrive 5.0 (screens)

I don't have tethering enabled on my phone as I'm on one of the old grandfathered unlimited data AT&T plans. If I ever wanted to switch to a plan that allowed for tethering, I'd have to go to a tiered plan where I'd only get a certain amount of bandwidth per month before being cut off of 4G LTE and put down to super slow speeds.

Its just a quirk of how cell phone companies work in the US.

There is a big "hype" around iDrive 5.0, but the real "hype" is the car itself!

I'd much rather and do use a tablet than a mobile phone.It's ideal for me to have a tablet in the car.

Older iDrives cannot be upgraded to v5 without some sort of retrofit. It's not a simple software upgrade.

Read it again please. I'm asking if the phone can freely surf internet like the internet option of the iDrive, or when you connect your phone to your car's wifi, a screen splashes asking you to subscribe to a mobile data plan.

I have a G11 with WiFi hotspot, and Internet, and while I can freely surf internet from iDrive, phones connected to the WiFi hotspot ask you to subscribe to a paid mobile data plan, here from Vodafone.

iDrive 5.0 was integrated into almost every new model vehicle BMW makes.

Once you have a July build and onwards you will have iDrive 5.0 across the board

Oh nice! I'm right by sunny isles! M2 meet up! I have yet to see one in the wild. I do come come across the the occasional paparazzi in a M3 /M4 trailing behind me with like 2 cameras on me.

Yep I'm on a similar plan and my contract ends soon. I went to the AT&T store and the guy looked it up and said he hadn't seen that plan in 5+ years but he admitted it's a better deal than anything they have now so he said he would not touch it.

Luckily if I don't change my plan I just stay on it month to month with no contract but now they don't subsidize new phones because 2 year contracts were killed off

Hopefully it won't be different for android but on the iPhone the full Spotify interface works over bt. If it doesn't on android maybe you could get an iPod and subscribe to the hotspot or use your android hotspot and setup IFTTT to auto connect once your phone connects to bt or something similar.
