I broke mine in by taking a nice long road trip through the smoky mountains:

So I guess with DCT you just vary the load upto 5k rpm using the shift paddles, and plenty of off throttle gear breaking?

Right to redline after leaving the dealer - the 5500rpm limit is for the diff and people who don't understand what's going on internally to avoid people doing burnouts / packing gears / during the clutch break in - they do not want you doing WOT shifts 1-2 and blowing the tires off which is hell on the rear diff clutch packs during break in.
Shift easy, avoid tire spinning, or working the diff hard and you're good to go. |

I always find this question to be funny. Spend a bunch of money on a car built by BMW and then there are still those who think some dude on the internet knows a better way of doing the break-in procedure than BMW does. Personally I see no logical reason to vary from a manufacture recommendation but there are some that have all kinds of theories of better ways none of which have much behind them except for theory. I am sure you can do just about anything to a new car off of the lot and get away with it at least in the short term but 1,200 miles of break in isn't exactly an eternity.

My dealer told me to keep it below 5k revs so that’s what I’ve done... but he didn’t mention no WOT or avoiding “full load” like the manual does. I was a bit annoyed when reading this the other day because while I haven’t exceeded 5k revs I’ve definitely driven the car solidly, with plenty of WOT up to 5k - always when engine is warm, and without any super hard shifts (MT).
I’ve mostly city driven it which has helped with constantly varying the rpm but I will be doing a mini road trip this week to help reach 1200miles on the odo, so will just try to vary speeds on the highway. Overall I tend to favour driving the car reasonably solid during break in rather than baby it, but that’s just me, it’s certainly not based on superior technical knowledge. Man it’s hard not to go nuts though, the car is just begging to be redlined |
