Can anyone tell what is causing this noise?

Hi folks, I am getting a humming sound when turning right at speed (60mph+). Started by checking wheel bearing play on the left side. I cannot perceive any play when pulling/pushing at 12 and 6 clock positions. However, when rotating the wheel back and forth there is a clunk sound and cannot see any pad movement causing it. Is this coming from wheel bearing? Thoughts?

Here is a video of the sound:

I removed the pads and the wheel speed sensor and it is pretty much confirmed it is wheel bearing, not a pretty noise to say the least:

https://youtube.com/shorts/Xa0VDz3XV...Oc84hoB1CA_opa

Ordered parts and now searching for torque settings for the wheel bearing hub, if anyone knows or can point me in the right direction, that would be great

If you are talking about those 4 bolts behind the wheel bearing:

Thank you, this is exactly what I was looking for. BTW, I am new to the M2, is there a recommended workshop manual to get or reference available in the internet?

Mileage on this car? Track days? I have yet to hear of this issue.

I just got it, 2016 and 48k miles. I know the car jumped a curb which bent a suspension link and a wheel and did at least 2 track days.

I highly recommend folks spin the rotors when changing pads to check for noise. There is no perceivable play, yet it is evident the bearing is failing per the video above.

The gold standard is ISTA, highly recommend getting it if you plan to do most of the maintenance/work yourself.

Also, do not blindly trust the torque specs you find on YouTube, most of them are guesstimates at best.

With that said, one exception to this rule is FaRKle! , highly recommend you sub to his channel [1], he does great stuff and the torque specs he provides are from ISTA (or at least it was spot on for all the ones I cross-checked).

Not sure what I would have done without Farkle and F87Source.

Thank you all, I will circle back as soon as I change the bearing to report on what humming/droning noises go away as reference for others since I do not have a baseline (the car already had the bad bearing when I bought it).

Very much a maintenance item

Yeah, it’s most likely from those two (+) track days

Classic damage from hitting the curbside edge of the track aggressively

Thanks MTown, better to stay out of the curbs at ~$350 each without labor.

I replaced the left side. It was major improvement but I could still hear a faint similar sound. Checked the right side and it is also going bad. Weird that the sound is still when turning right, I read about someone had the same thing on a M235i. Just ordered parts…. again.

For future readers, I ended up replacing the right side also and problem solved, no more humming when turning right.

Threads like this are really important. There simply isn't enough info online for items like this going bad. I'm also having to budget for bearings on an 80k mileage OG and wanted to know the exact same things.

The rears look like a royal PITA and the hub design is garbage.

BTW, you can add the Hoff to that video list... when you get past the intro.

I have a question about this. I have been reading there was a change in the middle of 2017 regarding these bolts. The length and pitch, specifically. Why 2017, I have no idea.

Can anyone explain what part numbers and parts are associated or why that even happened?

I don't want to mess this job up buying parts I can't use.

Since you have to replace the bolts also which screw directly on the new hub-bearing, you will be fine buying the latest part number. Here is what I ordered per side:

BMW Wheel Hub Assembly
BMW-31207857506
Price: $317.99
QTY: 1

BMW Wheel Bearing and Hub Assembly Bolt
BMW-31206872920
Price: $6.79
QTY: 4

BMW Brake Caliper Carrier Mounting Bolt
BMW-34106864424
Price: $7.09
QTY: 2

Much appreciated. Where did you get all the items? FCP or a combo?

Got all from FCP. I think they have a 10% discount code at the moment.

They’ve got 30% total off on brake parts - including the 10% on an order over $400, so ordered a load of parts. VNE Front rotors, akebono pads front and rear plus both hubs and hardware.

Too good to pass up. 👍🏻

That is awesome, BTW, this Hoff video has the step by step and torque settings for replacing the hub/bearings (ignore the video title).
