OG M2 is a real M car

I am really getting tired of hearing from the M2C crowd that my M2 is not a real M car. Some even call it an “M2-Lite”.

Let us be real. The M2 always was a real M car and considered by many as the best M car available from 2016-2018. It even made Car and Drivers top 10.

Let’s stop this OG M2 bashing.

Who said it’s not? I haven’t really seen that. Why be so insecure? The question wasn’t interesting in 2016. It’s obviously an M car.

I see. One person made one comment, I don’t really think it warrants a response.

It has been much more than one. Kind of a constant problem.

The regular M2 is like the F-sport of the 2 series models.

The OG is an M car. The OG N55 engine is beefed up a bit compared to the standard N55 and the suspension is definitely M.

It’s one of those social paradoxes where people who agree on like 90% of what is being discussed (we’re all M2 owners or prospective owners) get hung up and argue like they have nothing in common.

IMO I don't think engine alone is what makes an M car an M, its primarily the chassis (front and rear subframe), suspension upgrades, diff, and brakes. The only realy big difference with the engine is the better oiling, higher output, and better cooling. Essentially the engine is not the main center piece, it just outputs a set amount of power, its the chassis that you really feel with an M car. If engine dictated if a car is an M car or not, then essentially if you don't have the s63 then you are not an M car, because that is the top dog from bmw M.

The thing that makes an M car special over the base models is handling for track use, it was never meant to be a drag car. So I personally would actually have been even happier if the m2 had a highly modified and highly tuned B48 (with the proper sump that prevents starvation) that outputs the same power levels if not more. This way you save a crap ton of weight and have a lighter more agile car. Because you can always turn up the boost to compensate for power with a smaller engine, but removing mass is always a major challenge.

Also who cares what people say lol. Its your car, if you want to run an m4 badge and underglow then thats what you do. Who's going to stop you?

nobody cares. just enjoy your car.

there is another thread on the f80 forums were people are arguing that an M340i is an M car. There is no definition of an M car. The current G8x is a completely different type of car than the original e30.

Exactly! Of course the OG M2 is an M car. The 1M was an M car too, and had many of the same detractors complaining about it at release, for many of the same reasons. Oh but it has only turned out to be one of THE most coveted M cars of all time. If you own an OG and get butt-hurt every time somebody complains about it, just ignore the noise. Who cares?

OK with that rant out of the way.. here's something I never hear mentioned, and will only give the detractors one more thing to point to. Spot the difference here...

I agree with most of your post, but I do think there is a line drawn by BMW. That is the VIN. The 3rd character is always a "S" for a full M car. Could change one day, but so far it's been true.

I wouldn't let it upset you, this has been discussed ad nauseam, and no consensus has been or ever will be found.

As an OG M2 owner I consider my car an M Car because BMW says I own an M Car, but historically the "spirit" of M has always been competition, so I'm not above admitting that the M2C is more M than the OG (IMO) because it's more geared towards outright competition with the superior S55 and 2NH brake package.
