Does the rattling means it's bad enough and needs to be replaced?
Mine does a little bit but not as much as your video presents.

Based what I have read, some movement of the tensioner (parallel to the belt) is ok. Videos typically do not show the extent of the movement, mine I considered beyond normal. Even if there is some movement of the tensioner, there should be no pulley rattle. I have also read accounts of a steady tensioner soon after replacement but then movement presents itself within a few months (I will keep an eye on it).

Mine had the exact same movement. I never thought it was right so changed it over. 10 minute job.

My tensioner also has a slight wobble parallel to the belt. It only has about 38K mi (61K km) on it. The tensioner is rated for quite a bit more life before needing replacement. The belt itself is healthy. So I’ve decided to leave things alone for now.

I’ll be very curious to know if the wobble returns on your new tensioner or if it stays solid for a good many years to come.

Well, I casually took a look at the tensioner yesterday and it is indeed moving some. I don’t completely regret having changed it since I needed to change the belt anyways and it gives me peace of mind knowing the tensioner is new.

Here is my explanation why in the video post replacement it is nice and steady and may be the reason for inconsistent anecdotal experiences.

When I took the post replacement video, the car was cold and rpms raised which at least in my car makes the tensioner steady. Once it warms up, the rpms drop and there is some vibration in the engine and tensioner movement.
