iDrive 6.0 with touchscreen in M2

I saw reports in May about the M2 being upgraded to include iDrive 6.0 with touchscreen. My M2 is due to be built this week and I was just curious to see if anyone who has recently taken delivery of their F87 has a touchscreen iDrive system?

Thanks, I was really concerned I'd miss out. CarPlay is bad enough as it is, I'd really rather not have to use it with the the centre dial.

BMW makes by far the best user interface with the Idrive dial, I can't imagine why anyone would want to touch the screen over using the dial system.

Because someone will ask, "does it come with a touch screen?" Even today's Camera comes with a touch screen, might be 2 touch screens.

Look at this one.

I wouldn't use it, but it would be nice to have. The fingerprints would drive me totally nuts. I think it's an easier reach for the knob than all the way to the screen, as well.

I bet folks like me who prefer the knob can code it to iDrive 6 Lite which is for the non touch screen cars. It might be better if you're not using the touch interface.

The touchscreen is sometimes a lot more convenient than the knob, especially if you're new to the system, and the fingerprints easily wipe off. Also, Apple Carplay has been flawless so far, although its limitations like not connecting to Waze are annoying.

Not trying to spark a whole Apple vs. Android debate here, but as someone who doesn't own an iPhone (and never would), it irritates me that I had to get (and pay for) Apple Carplay on my car just so I could get the enhanced phone connectivity.

I don't really understand what I would get out of iDrive 6 lite. I can't really think of a case where I would want more than two tiles up at once.

I sometimes drive with the media tile, nav tile and the weather tile (you can arrange the order). Other times it's the map plus whatever. It's just an option, and easy enough to code if someone wants.

The weather tile is good to tell what town you're in while on a trip, too.

I've never used the touch version, but figure iDrive 6 full is optimized for the touch stuff.

I typically have Nav + media up. The weather tile seems irrelevant because if I am already driving that means the time for preparing for upcoming weather is over. I either have what I need with me in the car, or I don't. Maybe I should try it though. I wonder what settings I will lose if I code it?

Pretty sure that was only on the 2016 and maybe some of the earlier 2017s. The US-spec '18s all have the wifi & charging dock thing built in, AFAIK. I wish I could delete the charging dock because I'll never use that and would rather have the armrest space back. (I know that there's a DIY around, just a PITA to have to pay extra for that stupid charging thing and then have to pay for the non-dock parts to put in.)

I probably won't even use the wifi part... I use an iPhone but Carplay sucks and I keep my music on a USB stick or use Sirius. (I'd love to use Android, but the stability and battery life still aren't there yet. The OS's flexibility is so much better than iOS, no arguments here... although I have to support iPhones for work so it does make life easier to carry one. Maybe Oreo will finally solve the battery problems?)

Not all U.S. '18s have the charging dock built in. It's only included as part of the Executive Package.

The touchscreen would be nice if you have a passenger wanting to DJ.

Mine is a Canadian spec car., and we still have to pay for this. We get the bits from the US "executive package" as standard but we have to add the extended phone capability...go figure.

FYI... a bit old info, but here is what I could find on code 6NS with a quick google:

This option includes Bluetooth Audio Streaming7, Enhanced USB and Smartphone
Integration for using a Snap-In adaptor. If the vehicle is equipped with option
609 (Navigation), 6NS also includes a secondary microphone for enhanced hands
free communication1, Mobile Office2, and the ability to pair a second phone via
Bluetooth3,4. Additionally, when added to vehicles with the new Navigation
system (iDrive 4.2), Message Dictation5,6 is also included.
Bluetooth Audio Streaming
Enjoy the same standard of entertainment in the vehicle as you do in your home.
With Bluetooth Audio Streaming, music from an audio player or mobile phone can
be transmitted to the vehicle’s stereo system without the need for cables. The
title information for the song currently streamed from the music player or phone
appears in the vehicle display and can be selected and accessed via the iDrive
Controller.

Pretty sure all 2017+ US-spec cars come with 6NS by default; 6WD is the wifi hotspot connectivity, and 6NW is the wireless charging. 6WD and 6NW are packaged together as part of Exec in the US.

6NW overrides 6NS and includes everything normally in 6NS, AFAIK. Check out the 2017 order guide.

Note that on a US-spec car, none of these options require Carplay to be chosen.

However, maybe choosing Carplay for $300 adds the 6WD wifi hotspot automagically?

I believe on everything mid-2017 and you can add Carplay at a later date via the ConnectedDrive stuff from inside the car itself. I'm not sure if this means you're then stuck only with wired/cabled Carplay in a non-Exec car, or if they actually include the 6WD hotspot hardware in all the cars and just leave it disabled until you pay for Carplay? (You pay $300 in ConnectedDrive and they just turn it on remotely, making me wonder if it's possible to code in for free with esys...)
