No; it's likely a combo of both. I'm not sure how the system works in the M2, but in the 2 Series (228 and M235), only one exhaust outlet is open in Comfort, while both are open at certain throttle settings in Sport and (more often in) Sport+. ASD is more prominent, too, but barely.

I've heard the M2's stock exhaust. Good lord, why would anyone want anything artificial to flub up that sweet sound? ASD is the devil at work in that car. Get rid of it.

Have fun getting the trunk gasket back on. That part sucked. I also couldn't figure out how to snap the black guard back on top of the ring thing (first thing you remove). Other than that, it wasn't terrible. Recommend having good lighting in the trunk. I had a flashlight and did it at night. Would've been better in daylight or with some sort of non-directional light source.

I am a little confused. I read a post that ASD can be coded out.

To me the post below seems like ASD can be coded off?

Removing the ASD should be mandatory. I can't believe BMW released an M car with fake sounds. I'm an open minded person, but I would like to meet the person/people who think a car like this is better with ASD so I can talk some sense into them. Maybe acceptable on a 2.0l or smaller engine...Maybe. This car sounds even better now! Fabspeed catted downpipe on the way.

It can be. Many feel the result is undesirable.

Got it. I read the entire post and looks like I will get the bypass cable instead.

Let's see what it brings this afternoon. My garage has enough light. It is more that I have to keep it on and standing close enough to the sensors

Easy job! Most annoying was the plastic hanger on the left. That thing did not want to come out. Other than that all fine and easy.

I added one modification for myself. I put some pluckfoam between the harness and the bodywork, and between the harness and the plastic black cover that goes over the amp and the ASD module since all could be touching each other while driving and that is something I would like to hear since it is no silent inside :P

Some photos below... I will be driving later and I will let you know my feedback. I decided not to film it since it is so hard to hear the difference on a camera microphone. I hope I will be able to share my thoughts in words with you after driving.

First drive and what a difference... My first thought was what is my car quiet. The different is huge and bigger than I expected. It feels so natural now, and not so fake as before. As if I am back in my old 135i.

Absolute must-have for owners that are upgrading their exhaust since the ASD is not tuned to the louder exhaust note of the aftermarket exhaust system, especially when you are going to fit a catless down pipe.

All in all, a wonderful upgrade, one you have to get slightly used to if you've driven a while with ASD on but I will manage the upcoming weeks up to the moment the Akrapovic exhaust is fitted.

Thanks for sharing the install photos and providing your impressions. I totally agree the difference is dramatic. The only downside is that lots of road noise that was covered by ASD becomes apparent. But, for me, the natural noises are tremendously better than the fake ones. Especially under hard acceleration of when engine braking.

Enjoy!

Oh yes I forgot to mention that, the amount of road noise is really noticeable. I drove over a pothole and the noise it gave 'I was like huh what was that'. I never noticed it before, and now it was so much louder and easily noticeable in the cabin. You can clearly notice that they removed a lot of sound deadening from the car in comparison to the M235i.

Definitely better. The radio sounds better because it is not competing with the fake exhaust sound. So it is clearer.

Drove from Prague to the Netherlands via Germany today and that ment driving the Autobahn! Call me a weirdo, but I experienced something I would never have expected in the first place.

Normally I cruise at around 180 kmh on the autobahn in the M2, but now that the ASD is gone I found out that I was doing 210 kmh all the time. No freaking clue why, but subconsciously I constantly ended up at 210 as the speed I liked to cruise. Before 180 and now 210...

Only difference was the damn ASD and the fact that at 210 it was so loud previously that it was not pleasant to cruise at that speed. Also the radio is so much better now at those speeds that I can easily do 210 without being annoyed by the exhaust tune messing up my music through the speakers. Absolutely love the set up without the ASD sh**.

Only problem are those idiot drivers pulling out without looking, but ok...

Total Total WIN!!!

I installed the asd delete cable; took 30 minutes, this weekend.

Drove it to the office this morning. I absolutely love it!

I can still hear the exhaust and enjoy it without a problem, especially if I open the windows, and the radio sounds so much better! I really wonder what the BMW engineers were trying to accomplish?

The backfire "pop" sound when coming off throttle is much more subdued and that is fine by me! There is a similar backfire pop engineered into my 07 Mini Cooper S which isn't piped into the sound system and I will admit i do prefer this "au naturelle" (apologies to my french colleagues) sound much better. The ASD amplified version sounds too artificial.

Also when I got to the office my hearing was much improved!

Guess what?
I was at my dealer an hour ago. I explained the ASD issue. They're coding it out, for free, as we speak. I got an i3 to drive home in the meantime.(Great daily! It only goes 152kmh/95mph max...)
I can pick it up this early afternoon.ATM it's 11:00cet.

When going for service/maintenaince it's going to be ON again, but they're going to switch it back OFF off course..

Great service @www.debeier.nl
We're already customer there since 1991!

Cheers
