I'm curious - which state do you live in? If you don't want to share openly then feel free to PM me. Honestly speaking, if I lived in SC/FL for example, it's a no brainer. MI roads can be quite punishing and after reading this article, the ride quality made me second guess my decision:

I live in Southern California. like most states, we have rich neighborhoods with perfect roads and poor neighborhoods with pot holes everywhere. I drive to Los Angeles daily and most of the neighborhood around LA have very poor roads. It makes little difference whether you drive in these neighborhoods with a M240i or a M2, in terms of ride quality. I would rather drive the M2 in any neighborhood as I would have a lot more fun trying to avoid these pot holes with the M2.

If I live in your neighborhood I would still buy the M2 over the M240i regardless of the road condition.

Edit with additional comment:

I just read your attached article. If these same people drive through the same route with a M240i they probably will have similar back pain, just a tiny bit less.

Thanks guys for the feedback. I waffled back and forth all weekend but ultimately landed on the M240i due to adaptive suspension and will add M-performance LSD once she gets home; 90% of a M2 but without those beautiful hips and front fascia. The F80 will have to suffice for now ;-)

Build is:
M240i
EBII
719m wheels w/ MPSS
Black Leather
Driving Assistance
Premium Package
Adaptive Headlights
HK
Park distance
Moonroof delete
M-performance package (kidney grilles, front splitter, carbon fiber rear spoiler, MP stickers)
CF and Alcantara trim
M-performance exhaust and rear diffuser
Stainless steel pedals
CF selector lever
CF mirror caps

your decision.

What is your production week? Mine is 2017/10 week 41. I am hoping I will get the car before Christmas.

I think they just get to drive and ride in a ton of cars they don't have to pay for and it's firm relative to the 15 luxury daily drivers they tested over the last year. They are not in the same situation as someone who is actually considering using their own money to buy a car they are actually going to drive.

I also think in general people who review things are looking for pros and cons and don't want to come up empty in either category. It's easy to just be lazy and be like Con: Sports car doesn't seat the entire family. Etc.

They don't share powertrain, exhaust, suspension, bumpers, fenders, quarters, brakes, wheels. It has nothing to do with an M2 except that it has similar acceleration and looks the same to a non-car person.

Enjoy the ride. I drove an M240i, and decided to get the M2 instead. I felt like the wait was worth it.

I hope you enjoy it.

Get the M240 if you can get it loaded for $46-48K with the LSD and don't need the sexy M2 body. You can make M240 handle and accelerate like an M2 with some stickier, slightly wider rubber, mechanical LSD, and a very basic $200-600 tune. It will generate the same or better numbers, but won't feel as connected though.

The biggest issue I have with the M2 is that they're still commanding a premium and in many cases, a markup. For most US buyers, you're going to have to spend about $10K-15K more to get the M2 compared to a relatively loaded RWD M240i.

If I totaled my M235, it would be tough to spend that extra dough. But that body, the wheels, suspension tuning, the real eLSD, and all those other unseen enhancements are hard to pass up

2017 M240i fully loaded manual is about 49k with the discounts. A 2017 M2 fully loaded manual is about 54k with no discount.

The discount figure on the M240i was taken off truecar as for reference.

There would be some people who would disagree with that statement when it comes to the F80.

But that's a conversation for another time and another forum

You do realize the M2 just inherited the same front and rear suspension set up from the M3/M4 right?

It's just a fortuitous turn that putting them in a short wheelbase car like the 2 series gave us the magic that is the M2. They didn't set out to create a killer product that would put the M3/M4 to shame.

What you said came off to me like "well...he stayed at a Holiday Inn Express".

My entire point was that having a F80 (bloated very much attainable mass market mess IMO) does not all of the sudden make you an M expert. He could tell me he owns 100 GT3s and 488GTBs. It still doesn't validate picking a fully loaded 240 over a M2 in my mind. When MSRP is really close (loaded 240).

But to each his own.

As I said the M2 isn't some completely new ground up design. They just transplanted the diff and front and rear axles across from the M3/4.

The M3 isn't as bad as some reviews pan it out to be- Chris Harris prefers the M3 to the M4 in this generation.

FWIW the Mx40 does get some decent discounts here in Australia. I’m guessing he got the same.

That being said I’d still go for the M2. But if I had an M3 and wanted a second car, going for an M240i is an option - particularly with the adaptive suspension option which would come in handy in some places.

Guys guys. It's ok! You own a M2! You have an amazing car, I have an amazing car.... don't sweat it. Less time on bimmerpost, more time rowing or pulling through gears. Happy motoring!
