For those who are wondering what that means... this means what is the book value of your car in 3 years. The remaining of the 100% is what you will pay in depreciation (there is interest to account for as well).

Although they are not explicitly saying that, if you buy a 100K car with a 49% residual, your car will be worth 49K at the end of 3 years. Likewise, if you buy a 50K car at 49%... it will be worth less than 25K in 3y.

That is bad... REALLY bad.

That doesn't necessarily mean that the used M2 will be selling for 25K in 3y though... it's more complicated than that.

BMW isn't stupid? People are lined up around the block to get an M2. They will be hacked up, modded, flogged and then given back. And you expect BMW to give people good deals on them and then take them back?

People are delusional!
People are lined up around the block to get an M3 as well. Those M3s are currently being hacked up, modded, flogged and they will be given back. So yes, we expect BMW to give people good deals on M2s and take them back like they are currently doing with M3s and M4s.

M2 being the new hot car in the market with limited availability makes things obviously more difficult on our side. However, this doesn't mean that expecting BMW to offer good lease deals on M cars is being delusional.

Well depends if the owner choose to get another BMW or chooses another brand, Other then that if the owner keeps buying BMW then its good for BMW.

Of course you should still buy one. But chances are finance payment would be much cheaper than lease payment.

Finance for a few years and take a hit selling it. Still come out ahead of a lease. Better yet, buy a CPO one or few months used.

I'm assuming it's just simple demand, and not potential "track use" depreciation.

The used car market is much smaller, and demand is so much weaker for a high performance compact coupe.

BMW will be HAPPY to lease you an M3/M4 or an M235 for probably a much better deal than an M2 because those are their mass market vehicles.

1M, M2, M4 GTS are cars that are designed for track use and are speciality niche cars.

Did you just group the M2 with an M4 GTS? You know, that 1 of only 700 ever made, car?

My prediction: we see a lot more re-badged M235i's with modified quad exhausts on the street.

Yuppers. I just sold my M4 and leased a 2016 Jaguar F Type Coupe R February 1st for less than $1k per month.

You early adopters should consider PenFed's Payment Saver loan. Although you have to pay for sales tax, with BMW increasing the acquisition fee to close to $1k it still usually ends up being a better deal and you own the car.

With these horrible lease rates, maybe more people who have been waiting for the M2 will go for an M3/4 instead which will then drive up their demand

Yes, but isn't that the case for all cars and manufacturers? That has nothing to do with the great resale value of the 1M.

So true.

You bite the bullet and pay MSRP at the minimum (finance). Or you deal with those horrible lease numbers.

But with LCI only a year away on top of all that, there's no way I'd jump on these first cars personally.

In the UK, with the discounts available on the m3/4, it costs the same if not slightly less to get into an m3/4 than it does an m2

You would have to be a serious m2 to go for it over m3/4

That's my initial plan- still not crazy about paying sticker.

BMW will build as many as they can, but the for the early adopters, you'll have to pay to play.
