The review is on a tire that was brand new last year and I'm not even sure is available here in the USA yet. It has no reviews on Tirerack and it was not included in the latest CR review (where the 5 year old PPS came in first).

I'm not dismissing that it isn't possibly a great tire - I'm just saying it is a little like the PS4 - not here yet and not something to really consider (since you can't even buy it on Tirerack for most sizes). Now if BMW were to be able to GET this tire and actually put it on one of our cars, I don't think you would see people bitching so much.

Cause at the end of the day, the ContiSport 3 is a 10 year old tire vs. a PSS which is a 5 year old tire and still winning comparison tests.
Doh! My bad.

too many darn versions of the continentals. And wow.. I really had thought BMW was using a slightly newer version.

Still.. They have done this for decades. The E30 M3 came with Goodyear NCT but many cars got a Uniroyal Rallye tire instead.

When I bought my first E30 M3 in 1995 ..I pulled out the spare and on it had an old original Uniroyal that had never touched the ground.

I guess you only get four ten year old tires these days instead of five.

If you can get a star spec version of a tire for your BMW, spend the extra few dollars to do so.

This was explained to me by a tire & suspension testing engineer working for a large automaker on their flagship model. I was somewhat skeptical at first, but since then have independently researched the topic and have been surprised to learn how different various versions of tires of identical make and size can be.

If you have a choice, get the star spec version.

Here's a sample article if anyone is interested in reading further: http://blog.caranddriver.com/tread-r...acement-tires/
I am well aware and stand by my point. If the MPSS was so special and they spent all this time developing it for the M2, they wouldn't be loading cars with the Conti's. Companies aren't going to spend big money on modifying a soon-to-be-discontinued tire for BMW only to place it on just 60% of the cars produced.
The M2 version of the PSS yields better performance than the Conti installed on M2s now being delivered. Sources at Spartanburg and Thermal tell me the difference in performance is worth more than second or two on the track. The reason PSSs are no longer being shipped on new M2s is due to a larger agreement with Conti that wasn't in play when Michelin development of the M2 PSS was underway. This kind of thing happens all the time in business.

I normally agree with your comments, but take exception on this issue.

Back to my original question: how will the non-star spec PS4S stack up to the M2 version of the PSS?

Whoa hold on! At no point did I say the Conti's were better (or even comparable) to the MPSS...heck, I called them a flaming pile of garbage on this same thread haha

My M2 has the MPSS and I put them on my Z4MC as well, love the tires. It was just weird to see BMW play up the exclusive thing and then MY17 came along and they disappeared.

EDIT: to answer about the P4S - I've heard really good things but nothing in detail. I might pick up a set this summer and compare the two, dealer is on notice to let me know when they become available.

Good points, and I'm also hoping to try the PS4S once I burn through the PSSs.

The first thing I did in when I took delivery of a 135is in 2013 was to remove the run flats and install a set of PSSs. Interestingly, only the rear size was available with the BMW star. The fronts were an oddball size (215/40R18).

I have had no issues obtaining SC6 in USA, nor have some others.

They actually came out in late 2015 and are widely available worldwide. Audi even moved off MPSS and switched to SC6 for MY17 cars....even in USA.

Just because TireRack doesn't have means nothing. I could care less about Car and Driver. EVO, Autobild and the top magazines in Europe have all tested vs MPSS and MPSS lost.

So again, don't care about lack of reviews in USA. I haven't seen a Porsche 918 in the USA but pretty sure they exist.

I'll just continue to drive on the best while others speculate.

(I'm re-writing my earlier response.... trying a touch of niceness)

Hmmm, you might have misunderstood

The thread is about the tires that BMW is putting on the M2 (and M3 if you will) and that is the SportContact3 and MPSS. The MPSS is the better tire of the two

and...

1. The MPSS is much more available than the SC6
2. Nobody said the MPSS was better than the SC6

So... we are not knocking your tire - it is just not available on the M2 from the factory and it is harder to get if you did want to replace either of the two stock tires on the M2

PS - I have seen 3 918s.. including Meredith. Of course that's one less than the four SC6 tires I've seen.

Got it. Thanks. Haven't read the thread. Just notified of mention

As I mentioned in another thread, I'd be pissed off with SC3 as well.

I'll shut up now.

Carry on.

The only time I've heard star spec is in relation to the Direzza tires.

What are you guys talking about when you say "get a star spec tire?" As far as this thread goes.

BMW specific tires have a little star in the sidewall. Just like Mercedes have MO and Porsche have N0 On their sidewalls..etc,etc.

Basically there are MPSS tires and then there are MPSS star spec which are BMW OE. And specific to BMW. Just like MPSS with MO on the sidewall are specific to Mercedes.

My launch M2 came with MPSS on it and has accumulated 7,000 miles. Around 5,000 miles I noticed a drop off in grip. Anybody else notice this? Up til 5k it seldom broke loose unless I was trying to slide it. Since then it is a bit squirmy and slides much easier. BTW, Tires have lots of tread left.

I'd double check the tire pressure.

2017 week 1 production with MPSS

My week 1 production came with MPSS. My car is a BSM 6MT. Took delivery yesterday at performance center. All the performance center cars have the Contis on them and I thought they drove well, for what its worth. Haven't been able to really test the MPSSs out yet.

The MPS4S is out at Tire Rack! Really wonder if my March build M2 will come with them... With the new tires out, I'll be pissed to the point I won't take the car if it has Contis on it.

Just my 2cents and I hope I a wrong. You won't see a M2 with MPS4S tires for a long long time.
