BMW always does this with M cars. They use an exclusive Michelin tire the first production year of a new model and then supplement that tire with another tire, usually Continental, for the rest of the production years.

Contis came installed on my MY2017 M2

I took delivery of my MY2017 LBB M2 yesterday (with iDrive 5.0 and Apple CarPlay) and it had ContiContactSport3 tires on it. Was expecting Michelin PSS tires. Anything we can do?

I don't think there is anything you can do. I went back and looked at everything I could find that was written and I could not find anywhere where they specified the tires being Michelin, it just says mixed perf. tires and then specifies the size. I hope mine comes with Michelin and I will be irritated if it doesn't but BMW M division does test any tire that goes on the car to make sure it performs to their standards and I have read good comments on the Conti's so I am not going to lose sleep over it. I originally thought that there was something in writing speaking to the PSS as the tire but its not on any of the price/build sheets so I don't see how we can complain and get something else anymore than if any other part of the car was OEM approved but made by another manufacture. These guys switch OEMs all the time for parts. I read that the breakdown of M5 and M6 is 60% Michelin and 40% others, I think the other in that case was a Pirelli tire. The first year was exclusive then they went to two manufacturers. The also did that with the E9x M3 and the current M3/4 so its clearly what they do.

How the hardball game works...

CA: Sure is a beautiful car, so you ready to drive home today?
POED: I'm suppose to get Michelin PSS
CA: Let me talk to the Sales Manager
CA: He said OK. Let me talk to the Parts Manager.
CA: Great news. We're going to switch out the tires! They'll be here in 4 weeks. See you then.

I read reviews from a tire distributor and initially people were ok with the conti, but they get really loud after 10K miles or so, according to customers.

When they reopened production they did so at a much lower rate. This is why some tire sizes are tough to find or are impossible. What can and does happen is that BMW or any other manufacture goes to build the car and the OEM tire producer cannot supply tires for it so they substitute so they can get the car built rather than hold the order. BMW will tell you it is an equivalent tire but we all know that isn't the case. They advertise the car as having PSS so I won't be accepting anything but PSS. That doesn't mean the Cont's are terrible or anything, they are just not the tire that was designed to go on the car.
I couldn't find anything on the BMW site that mentioned PSS tires just "performance" tires.

Nothing you can do. Car manufacturer put tires on their cars as they come from their supplier. Are the PSS that much better than the Contis. I am just happy I got my car (and it came with PSS on my MY17).

Whine ?...

Or instead you can remember that you are buying a CAR that comes with a disposable set of tires , not a set of Michelin PSS tires that comes with a car ...

I have a MY2017 and getting stuck with Contis was a big fear of mine. I was massively relieved to see PSS's on my car. Until I read this thread I thought the switch to Contis were just a rumor. Now I guess I am just one of the lucky ones to get the PSS on a MY17.

Maybe he can use it as an excuse to burn the Contis faster to buy the PSS.

I guess we will find which is better when the Conti owners have some miles on them. My personal experience with both tires, I'll take the Michelins any day. To be fair they were not Performance tires that I had, as I mentioned before, I have not read any reviews that had Conti's just PSS. Maybe it's just a coincidence?

I like Michelins. I only buy Michelins for my cars. I'm bummed that I didn't get Michelins. I'll replace the ContiContactSport3 with Michelins, whichever they recommend at the time.

All that said, this affords me an opportunity to try another brand that I would not have otherwise bought and based on past experience I don't see these (or any brand) lasting much past 30K on this car.
