Has one of the best engines of any car I have ever driven, and a shorter and more lively/playful wheelbase than the E46 M3. Not super practical, but you can get two carry-ons in the back for road trips. Or golf clubs. If you have a chance to get one - you won't be sorry.

Good place to look @ a well kept E46 M3 or E92 as well. But they're pricey. Last time I looked, as I would love to buy my dad one someday, the nicer Z4MCs were running in the ~35K range.

I absolutely loved, loved, loved the Z4MC and it is truly a great car to drive due to the engine and the hydraulic steering. However, the car was a handful at the limit and could turn on you in the blink of an eye. I have no regrets selling it for the M2 (partially because I plan on buying it back in a few years...long story) because it is more practical and provides more creature comforts and a less-stiff ride compared to the Z4MC. To put the performance in a simple perspective I can say this: there is a merge I take often, and in the Z4MC I could do it at about 90 km/h before things got scary. In the M2, I've taken that same turn at 120 km/h and could've had a cup of coffee while doing it - it is really that good. So in summary, I will leave you with this: the Z4MC is a rare car from a past era that drives as analog as a two door small coupe should, but it is a handful. The M2 is better in every way (except maybe looks) and I would not hesitate to make the same decision again. Disclaimer: I "sold" my Z4MC to my father who will keep it for a few years and has agreed to "sell" it back to me in 5-10 years. This helps, as I know I will be getting it back and can drive it on occasion when I visit him. |

And at that price, it seems quite good, considering the new F80 would have been $70k for me, and local GT4 is almost $100k. Quote:

Well friends, my search for the next car has come to an end and will be picking this up on Saturday.
I know it's completely different than the M2 I lusted after (along with all the other cars that were on the "list"), but I'm going to thoroughly enjoy this Z4MR. I'll still check in this subforum from time to time though!

That's actually one of the main reasons I went with a Roadster over a Coupe. I already DD an E36 M3 coupe, and also have an E92 M3 coupe, so the Z4MR will make an awesome fair weather car. I really still want to test drive an M2 though

Gotta agree with W///! To be honest I am not a huge fan of the Z4 looks-wise - nice (and many love it), but it doesn't move my needle much. But your Z4MC looks (looked) awesome and removed all my reservations! Must have been painful to let go of those keys that last time!!

Still trying to track down a friendly M2 owner in the San Francisco Bay Area, then I should be able to add more color to this comparo.
My wife has owned a 228i MSport MT for the past ~35K miles and its a great little car. A few nit picks and I wonder how much of a transformation the M2 is! |

I no longer have my Z4M, but I am worried that if I get an M2 I will be disappointed with the amount of feedback the M2 delivers in comparison. It's undeniably faster and better handling, but maybe I am better served going to another 2 seater for that feeling? Hmm...

Just noticed you have or had an FR-S. How did that compare? Could you turbocharge a BRZ/86, upgrade suspension and tires and get something that is comparable to the M2 in performance but more of a sports car in driving dynamics? |

That being said a used 987 or 981 Cayman would spank the M2 in driving dynamics and sportscar "feel" as we call it. You cannot compare a purpose built chassis (Pcar) to a 2-series platform sent over for performance surgery after the fact (a la M division). A test drive tells all though! With the M2 vs. the Z4, technology has moved a long way. The M2 chassis is stiffer and better balanced, and most importantly there are significantly less rubber bushings. While the steering feel of the Z4M will be better, the chassis connection of the M2 is superior because there is simply less rubber in between your ass and the road. A direct bolted subframe (no subframe bushings in the M2!) and the M differential are just awesome in the directness it provides. There is zero slop in the rear end on track, which is something that can't be said about previous generation cars. And I have gained back 95% of the steering feel compared to previous generation hydraulic racks by replacing the front tension strut bushings with a monoball bearing. It is my belief that this particular bushing is responsible for the majority of steering feel complaints on F30 cars. |

The Z4M on the other hand is a one trick pony. The ride is stiff, view is different, engine revs high ect ect.... you really have to work to get anything out of it, which is why I love this car. I think the M2 would be thrilling in a more effortless kind of a way if that makes sense. I've learned that my M3's (E36 and E92) are completely different animals vs the Z4MR.
