dropped it off and am waiting.

they have also been tasked with investigating a very loud knocking noise coming from both of the upper front strut areas. to say I am disappointed with Ohlins would be an understatement...

Ah sorry to hear that. Are they fitted to standard top mounts? Some Ohlins dampers do seem to make knocking noises, mine were making a loud clunking noise and I've taken them off and sent them back under warranty.

Yeah, I've kept the stock top mounts. I actually forgot to order brand new ones when the car was apart, a bit dumb from my side given the car's got some miles on it now.

Then I started to get the knocking sounds after a couple hundred miles... were yours also clunking at low speed over uneven pavements or with the wheels turned? Mine also clunk when braking hard on track. I suspect it might have got to do something with the spacer that's there between the Ohlins spring and the OEM top mount.

Told the lads at the shop to ring me as soon as they know more which should be today or tomorrow.

Standard top mounts should be fine, I just asked as I have Millway Mounts and they use an adapter.

Mine were clucking at low speed, constantly, only when you were driving on smooth tarmac constant speed were they quiet, I might want to put them back on but am I going to get more issues i dont know.

For owners complaining about the knocking noise at slow speeds etc there is a thread on this forum that identified there was an issue with the internal sleeve where ohlins altered the design. Many owners sent the dampers back to ohlins and the old style sleeves were fitted. Problem solved.

right then mate, back from the shop!

springs 80 N/mm & 160 N/mm - I can totally recommend and would even suggest Ohlins to use as their standard fit. They have taken the edge off, so to speak. Still a very firm ride, but it's bearable now which it was not with the 90/190.

Car was fine, no noises, for a few miles... and then I started getting some creaking noises and the infamous metal clunk. Went back in there and found out the lower bearing that's part of the OEM top mount is shot, creating resistance and preventing the Ohlins spring from turning up top. When it finally lets loose, it clunks. So getting new top mounts and going there again, for the third time. Not happy, could've done them the last time, but it is what it is.

To reiterate, this is an F80 on stock 18s.

Ah good too hear you got your car back and is just the top mounts, perfect time for an upgrade ha.

What setting do your run your dampers on? I think I found front 12 rear 14 was as soft as I could go without undulations being uncomfortable at speed.

Stark contrast to get the M Performance coilovers to feel like the Ohlins I have to run them really stiff, and the still seem pretty road compliant but if i track they might be too soft.

Its a tough one, got a couple of weeks to decide what to do.

Hey guys, so I'm tempted to refit my Ohlins, however im thinking of going from 90/190 to 90/160 or even 90/140.

Just wondering people who have done this, how did it feel after changing the springs, both for compliance and handling. Can you make good progress over a bad road without getting bucked around alot?

As far as we know all US sold kits have either been repaired or replaced. Current kits do not have this issue.

My 90/190 set up is fine for the street. I also have bearing top mounts/camber plates.

If you compare these rates across the board, you will find most other manufacturers have gone with significantly lower spring rates than Öhlins standard.

After discussions with Brian at Öhlins, Leonard at Swift, and Harold at HP Autosport I ordered a set of Swift springs in 70/140 to replace the standard Öhlins 90/190 spring rates. These rates should be the perfect setup for someone who wants a compliant ride on the street while still allowing you to carve back roads and still occasionally hit the track.

Here is the foundation for my research:
Öhlins F87 M2 kit (standard)
Front: 90 N/mm // 515 lbs/in
Rear: 190 N/mm // 1087 lbs/in

BMW M2 Stock
Front: 35 N/mm // 200 lb/in progressive
Rear: 125 N/mm // 714 lbs/in progressive

M-Performance coilovers: (40% stiffer than stock - rates extrapolated not verified)
Front: 50 N/mm // 285 lb/in
Rear: 175 N/mm // 1000 lbs/in

Dinan
Front: 44 N/mm // 250 lb/in linear
Rear: 131 N/mm // 750 lb/in linear

Öhlins F32 4-series kit (standard)
Front: 60 N/mm // 343 lbs/in
Rear: 160 N/mm // 914 lbs/in

Brian @ Öhlins recommends:
Front: 70 N/mm // 400 lbs/in
Rear: 190 N/mm // 1087 lbs/in

Harold @ HP Autosport recommends: (https://f87.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...6&postcount=34)
Front: 80 N/mm // 457 lbs/in
Rear: 140 N/mm // 800 lbs/in -OR-
Rear: 160 N/mm // 914 lbs/in

Leonard @ Swift recommends:
Front: 8" 70 N/mm // 392 lbs/in
Rear: 9" 140 N/mm // 784 lbs/in

KW3 Variant 3: (standard settings)
Front: 40 N/mm // 226 lbs/in progressive
Rear: 160 N/mm // 685 lbs/in linear w/helper spring
Other forum members custom spring rates on Öhlins coilovers:
Saanen (https://f87.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...5&postcount=49)
Front: 80 N/mm // 457 lbs/in
Rear: 160 N/mm // 914 lbs/in

PLF69
Front: 70 N/mm // 400 lbs/in
Rear: 140 N/mm // 800 lbs/in

Chaselib
Front: 60 N/mm // 343 lbs/in (used 8" Ohlins spring)
Rear: 100 N/mm // 571 lbs/in (used 10" Swift spring)

moveswiftly
Front: 80 N/mm // 457 lbs/in
Rear: 160 N/mm // 914 lbs/in

Got f1? (https://f87.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...7&postcount=42)
Front: 70 N/mm // 400 lbs/in (used 7"/178mm 2.5"OD Hypercoils spring)
Rear: 123 N/mm // 702 lbs/in (used 10"/254mm 2.5"OD Hypercoils spring)

The V3 rates are wrong for M2 Comp.
Front: 47 N/mm
Rear: 120 N/mm + 20 N/mm helper spring
You can run a max 30NM stiffer spring front and rear
Above info from KW.

Trying to get the M Performance rates but its proving hard. I don't think they will be as hard as stated on this thread.

3DM and Turner spring rates for their custom damping setups need to be added to this list.

3DM: F/R 70/160 N/mm (customizable)

Turner: F/R 70/140 N/mm
