Purchased pre owned m2 with weird exhaust mod- what is it

Hey guys.
Glad to join you guys on this forum- just picked up a car I've wanted for a very long time- the 2018 m2 with very low milage. The previous owner old me he's installed a catback exhaust system on the car.

Only issue is, it looks off. It looks like he did a muffler delete(?), and only one exhaust pipe on each side is actually connected to the exhaust tips and the other is welded shut.

Is this exhaust setup a concern? Never seen this before and havent found anything like this online. Seems like it wasn't done properly and might be harmful to the engine- thoughts? I was thinking of getting the M performance exhaust for it anyways, so should i just swap out to be safe?

The welded shut portion is a helmholtz resonator. It was probably custom built by a muffler shop and shouldn't hurt the car. Those chambers are used to alter the exhaust sound and reduce drone.

As WedgeSalad said those are Hemholtz Resonators. I had them on my Camaro SS 1LE - they work well to reduce drone. It definitely it not going to hurt your car.

How does it sound?

Agreed with the posters above. As long as you are happy with the tone of the exhaust and the level or lack thereof of drone, you are fine to keep this system as is.
