Rodger that. Always had 2 wheel drive cars growing up. Was worried about all the naysayers on rwd. Got my 135, put snows on, just took it to killington in middle of Sunday storm. 4-5 inches of snow on access road to ski resort climbed right up. A correctly balanced vehicle, technique and tires and all is fine.

Actually quick edit here... Nissan GTR is hands down probably the most impressive awd machine in that price point. and it competes fully with cars double it's price point like 911 turbo etc. in awd performance.
My friend had one for two years. Nice vehicle BUT,
- you need chewing gum when you drive it
- is an excellent machine to get rid of any kidney stones you might have
- the plastic in a Focus is 5 times superior to the Nissan GTR
- couldn't justify the price for the car, but that's just me

I was especially impressed with how well that thing jumped off the line from a stop - now light to light sprints are not that important to me, but the F80 struggles (IMO) at putting the power down effectively. Cue the flashing traction light.

AWD would seemingly eliminate that, and give me more mobility options up here in snow country (the M3 has been out of the garage once all week, and that's pretty damn annoying).
The fact that the new 991 GTS can hit 60 in 3s flat tells me that AWD is not needed in any 911 due to the weight over the rear axle. Equip it with snow tires and its winter capabilities should be even better than M cars which are very capable.

One of my biggest gripes with the F80 is the sound (or lack thereof) - the 5 pot in the RS3 sounds amazing and I think it actually looks very good, especially from the front. I also love the dash/tech, flat-bottom steering wheel and the interior overall.

I'm trying to find one to drive, as most of the ones coming into Chicago are already sold. Hopefully that works out for me soon.
I found the front nice too. Dimensions are about right for my needs. I might have some space for winter wheels yet I hate taking the car to the dealership, having my upholstery damaged or dirty, etc. I hate winter wheels yet I am aware that an AWD vehicle with proper winter tires is king. Audi's interior is ok, I like the steering wheel and the dash board, yet I found that the vents are horrible and the lack of Push Start button baffles me for the money).
I will try to get a drive test when weather gets better. I never thought that I need to look outside the Bavarian family...

I hear you - I have done the snow tires on my previous 135s and the 235 before but I don't have as much garage space as I used to. It would be nice to have a car that could truly be an all-arounder out of the box.

The traction issues of the F80 are such that I don't know if I am currently getting the best RWD experience. I hope that's something the engineers put more focus on in the next generation...

Porsche is good, Ferrari FF was fun too, yet they fall under the hobby car, not really practical.

If I want a hobby car I keep the RWD style, M2, M3, etc. is more fun for me.

Did not have a chance to drive the new M5 yet, best of both worlds blows me away. I think is a wonderful machine. Actually I am afraid to drive because I might like it too much...
I hope the new M3 will bring a similar approach.
Anyway, 340xi or 440xi are very nice machines.

Wait, I am sure the RS3 has a push button start? At least all the reviews I have seen have one?

Never drove it so I might be wrong. I was reading a review as well and they were saying that they need to turn the key. Maybe I am wrong.

Coming from an Audi Owner the RS3 needs to look more of the part. Compared to the M2 the RS3 looks like an S3 with different bumpers, wheels, brakes, and exhaust, that's it. The RS3 looks like a really nice S3 whereas the BMW M2 could never be confused for a M240i. And on top of that Audi is charging more for the RS3 than the M2. Charging more for a car that doesn't have a wide-body kit. The Audi is way too expensive for what it is. If it had wider hips I would be singing a different tune but as it stands now. The RS3 looks too mundane to be compared with an M2

Check out around the 4:45 mark - looks like it’s there to the left of the gear selector

RS3 is Automatic and AWD, you CANNOT consider these two cars competitors!!!!!
They just happen to be similarly sized and priced...
I wanted to love the RS3... I did until I drove one
I am an Audi FANBOI and I don't care for the RS3. They say it has "rear wheel drive feel/tendencies".... not so much
How can they say that...this car had reverse staggered setup. Front 255 and rear 235. It looked odd right there, I test drove one.
I know right?! that's what the YouTube reviewers are saying. my audi sales rep let me go mildly wild on our test drive(friend of mine). it was quite difficult to get ANY fun out of the rear end...Gigity
I must say the stock exhaust sounds good. Drive wise not that great. Numb steering takes away all the fun.....Bmw electric is still better....although I hate that too.

I agree in some respect as I have an M3 manual and on my Nokians I get around NE winters with no issues. But the big issue for me is the 90% of the time that there isn't snow, I'm on lower performing winter tires. When I had my 335 xdrive, I slapped on DWS Contis and I was able to keep a lot of performance during the winter. I imagine the same for the Audi.

Curious as to why the RS3 has dual exhaust and the S3 has the quad exhaust. Usually quad exhaust is a sign of more...oomph.

Owned many BMW and (awd) Audi. If you want a fun factory setup - BMW hands down. You can tune an Audi to be more driver oriented (read: fun - less under steer) but it's not that way even in the RS from the factory in my opinion. Not saying they both are not fast from the factory though. You also have to adapt to the AWD in your driving style (slower in - faster off) which many people don't like / aren't used to - which again = less fun for most. Finally if you are only capable of driving at 90% - which most are or should be on public roads - both are great. I prefer the more aggressive styling and more engaging driving experience of the BMW's - but both have their merits.

No surprises here on the outcome

Sorry, but there was no surprise ending here. Just the plain truth that the M2 is better. Oh, and about the comment regarding winter driving - just do what I did - I mounted Michelin Alpin PA4s at all four corners. Never mind the ice racing last weekend, the M2 is great in the snow in upstate NY.

An M2 will do fine with a proper set of Nokian winter tires.

M cars are great in the snow because of the limited slip diff. Ground clearance will be the biggest challenge, but AWD isn't as necessary as a lot of people have ben led to believe by marketing and sales people trying to make a few extra bucks.

What specific did you not like about the RS3? I am curious as I am on the fence shopping cars. I talked to a couple ex RS3 owners that said they did not care for it save the money and just get an S3 if you like the look of the car. Just wondering..I have never owned an Audi and would like to try one something small and fun. I drove an S3 and I was really pleasantly surprised how dynamic and fun it felt. Needed about 30 or 40 more hp IMO though.
