According to this article, there will be only one M2 (the CS) using the s55,the current M2 will stop production in 2017... http://www.bimmertoday.de/2016/09/26...ing-unterwegs/

Quote:
For a week now, the BMW M2 CS has been on everyone’s lips and today there may be even a first spy video of the upcoming compact sports car from Garching. According to the video description, this M2 prototype – wearing some light camouflage – has been testing on the Nurburgring while delivering a better exhaust note than the current M2.

Furthermore, sources say that the 2018 BMW M2 CS will inherit the M2 as we know it now. Therefore, it will not be a special model offered in parallel with the ordinary M2, but rather replacing the M2 of now. The new CS symbol CS on the boot stands for Clubsport and promises additional performance, which will indeed deliver thanks to revised engineering layouts.

The most important change concerns the engine because the N55 previously used is rumored to be replaced by a revised 3.0 liter TwinPower engine based on the S55 unit found in the M3/M4.

Around 400 horsepower and nearly 500 Nm of torque are on the table for the M2 CS, but even more important than the slightly higher peak power is the more aggressive response of the twin-turbocharged straight-six cylinder with 3.0 liter displacement. The M2 CS is likely to be available with the same six-speed manual and 7-speed M-DCT transmissions.

What remains a mystery for now are the additional performance-related changes that the M2 will offer. Possible enhancements to aerodynamics and some lightweight materials are the obvious choice, while a sports tuned suspension will bring the M2 CS closer to its rivals, like the Porsche Cayman GT4.

The current M2 is scheduled to have its production run end at the end of 2017 which leaves room for the M2 CS in the following year.

Nice find. Now we wait on price and (un-)availability.

If that's true there's no way its selling for under 60k starting price.

I dont want to miss another opp like that!
The opportunity with the 1M was that it was available at a $60k price point, and they haven't depreciated because of the limited availability. Rarity is the primary driver of the price. That's not to say the 1M isn't a great car, but there are plenty of great BMWs that depreciated normally. Supply & demand.

IMO, we won't see that again. At least not for a car that BMW plans out. The 1M was a very unique circumstance. You could almost consider it an accident. Look at the M4 GTS. There's a car that won't depreciate like the rest of the line-up, but you need $150k and solid connections to get your hands on one.

It seems probable that we'll see the S55 in some variety of M2 at this point, but I think the guys hoping to see it in the MY2018 base car are dreaming a little big. Putting the S55 in the M2 presents two challenges for BMW

1) It is a more expensive motor to produce. The big cost being the extra turbo. The S55 also has more expensive parts in it than the upgraded N55.

2) M4 market protection. The M2 is already chomping at the heels of the base M4. BMW will tell you all day long that the M2 is targeted at a different buyer, but the problem isn't that M4 buyers will purchase an M2 instead, it is that your average M4 buyer (who is never going to tap the car's performance anyway) will be frustrated with BMW and go to another brand.

I'd expect to see the S55 in some sort of special edition M2, which BMW will price starting somewhere above $90k.

Personally I'm not too sure.If you look at what has happened to the m235i>>>>m240i transformation, the new model with the better B58 engine and improved tech is slightly cheaper (in the UK).

I'm not stating the CS will be cheaper but I don't reckon it's going to be as expensive as some folks make out.

BMW have still got to sell them afterall.

Might be some sort of nice air box.

Not frustrating if it's going to be 10's of thousands more $$.

I don't find this unfeasible because the M2 and M3/4 are very different cars, that attract different segments of buyers. The guy who wants a bigger car, needs back seats for kids, wants premium materials etc, will not get an M2.

In my mind the size is the biggest thing and overall looks. For that reason, the M2 will not cannibalize M3/4 sales, as it will be detuned anyway, and the overall packages are very different.

Honestly I really want to believe that you're right. But I just can't see BMW sticking the S55 in the regular M2. The CSL seems a lot more plausible for that application.

The reason I stopped looking at the m4 was that it was simply too much money compared to other options. The m2 at $10k more isn't such a good option either.
Definitely wouldn't want to drop an extra 10k on an M2.

Absolutly not frustrated and feel lucky to put a hand on a M2, maybe it would be more complicated in the futur to have one or an other version of M2 and multi-turbos is not for me

There was reference in a post to an further progress M4 model similar to an M2 model to keep the gap. That also points away from a GTS and ZCP, as they exist.

Time will tell.
Its already been hinted that the first test mules will have "underneath" modifications only.

To me it doesn't make sense why they would have spent the R&D money to beef up the regular N55 if they're going to drop in the S55 into the standard model a year later? Could have just done that from the beginning and just detuned it to 370hp but apparently the N55 upgrade was cheaper.
Exactly

The thing I don't get it is why they have camo on this car. If it had no markings, it would be much more invisible in plain site as the M2 has already been released.

Who says that BMW M wants it to be invisible ?

Just a guess, but probably in some meeting room at the BMW M HQ in Garching: "Let's put some camo tape over it and it will be picked up by the interwebs in no time. Let the hype commence".
