Don't get how a creature comfort option hurts the 'purist' crowd. Asking for an option, not a permanent default. How does non-black leather as an option hurt performance?

And again, purist should buy a Porsche. Better yet, a Lotus. Hell, make it a Caterham. Those 2 back seats adding up to 3500lbs makes the M2 anything but purist. BMW have never been a purist brand.

They might not be an entirely "purist" brand anymore, but for this car, they are trying to take that direction. Combine that with the attempt to loop as much as possible into the car as standard, keep the price "reasonable" and then you get into the cost > performance rationale.

Everything is give and take. I am personally happy with the car as is and see no need for any "creature" comforts other than what is included in the car already, which in my opinion is more than enough.

Just my $0.02, but I really think people are blowing this concept of material entitlement from automakers out of proportion these days.

I think BMW Canada is already testing the market with the moon-roof

Then it goes back to what I said, that this is about money. BMW being awfully stingy not to even offer it as an option (retooling and sku management cost over expected option revenue).

And I don't get this entitlement speech. People are just saying they are turned off and won't buy this car with reasons including lack of moonroof and black only interior. And i'm following my own advice that if I want a real performance sports vehicle I'm likely gonna look at a Porsche 981 CS. Otherwise I'm gonna go down to a used M235i.

M2 is a compromise vehicle. Whether it to min out the financial damage to BMW for this niche vehicle, or to prevent cannibalization to the M3/4. It can be such a better vehicle both performance and luxury and so people are disappointed, and hence voting with their feet. No entitlement here. Just rational decision on where hard earned money should go.

I am quite surprised there are not as many people complaining about memory seats. They are absolutely useless in a car like this.

I, for one, like the added sunshine.

If a CF roof was offered, I would go for that. Otherwise I would absolutely want a sunroof. Especially where I live? It pretty much never closes.

I'm with you, the only time my sunroof is closed is if it's raining. Thankfully we have the option of the sunroof here so was a no brainer for me.

I'm hoping the 2017MY brings increased production, a sunroof option for North America and better lease terms. Another color choice or two would be nice as well.

I can see the point of the purist crowd looking for a pure sports coupe, but for $55K this compact had better have some luxury to go with it's performance. For myself, this will be an every day driver with a fun factor, not a track car. I think all the standard features are great and wish a sunroof was available. My current car is my first car with a sunroof and I love it. Will the lack of a sunroof keep me from buying one? Probably not.

I do think BMW should offer a competition package that deletes some of the standard equipment on North American cars that's optional on European cars in lieu of adjustable suspension and a CF roof.

Sunroof takes up headroom that you will miss if you ever wear a helmet in the car.

Who thinks they are a purist for wanting a sunroof anyway? That sunroof adds weight and takes up headroom.

Sunroof might be nice on your way to the hairdresser though...

Full Definition of purist:

A person who adheres strictly and often excessively to a tradition; especially : one preoccupied with the purity of a language and its protection from the use of foreign or altered forms.

No moonlight for you !

I really wondered if this was something that I would miss, but it hasn't been the case in almost a year of ownership, sans moonroof. so I don't think it is a big deal.

With that being said, I actually think it is a good thing to offer it - in whatever markets have that option. Could widen the appeal of the car to a wider audience - I do know folks that have said they would really miss having a moonroof after riding with me...

Sunroof would be a good way to devalue your M2 in the second hand market. I know slicktop E46 M3's demand a much higher premium than sunroof models.

I really can't understand this anti sun / moon roof sentiment. What does it add in terms of weight ? Can't be much.... As for me I'll never wear a helmet in my car. When I come back from the hairdresser is the only time I ever put the roof on my Lotus - no point in forking out for a nice hairdo if you're going to look like a hedgehog when you drive home. Luckily my M2 will be European and I'll definitely take the sun / moonroof option even though it costs € 850. It's nice to have the sun shining in and being able to see the mountains through it and get fresh air... and hear the exhaust. It'll also lighten that black interior even when closed.
