Rotor scoring

Checked my brake rotors today and noticed my rear discs were scored. The front ones were as smooth as glass. I have 5000 non track miles on my car. I will be switching to Pagids in about 10 days for the track. Anyone have a similar experience with their rear brakes? Should I have the dealer look at these or is this normal?

What do you mean by scored? Unless there are deep grooves I would just put the pagids on and bed them in properly and take a wait and see approach. Your car is still very new so I suppose if you have time it wouldn't hurt to take it to the dealer to have them take a look. The rears do very little braking so its not uncommon for them to look different than the fronts.

Scoring like when your pads are down to metal on metal contact and start eating up the rotors. I think I will have dealer take a look. This can't be normal.

5000 mi and no track with pads showing down to metal? no not possible unless you were testing 60-0 stop distance full breaking everyday.

I would definitely get the dealer to take a look at it. Different situation as it was a motorcycle but I had a brand new BMW motorcycle eat through the rear brake pads and score the rotors in under 1,500 miles. Had to get the rotor, pads and a few caliper components replaced under warranty.

Not a chance that you have metal to metal contact from the pads, no harm in having a dealer look at it. Please report back

The rear pads are the one with the scoring , which is unusual considering the rear pads only do 15% braking.

Let me clarify, as I understood that the rear rotor was scored. So what do the rear pads look like? Assume they are also showing some scoring, but is there anything weird looking, is the wear even across the pad?

Also, do both rear brakes show the same problem?

Rear OEM pads showed no scoring, and even wear. Scoring was on both rear rotors. After 2 hours of track time with Pagid RS29 Track Pads, rotors are smooth across surface again. I am keeping an eye on them to see if scoring returns with OEM Pads.

If the "scoring" was removed from 2 hours of track time with the Pagids then you didn't have scoring. The RS29 is pretty easy on rotors compared to the vast majority of track pads. My guess is you had some pad residue from the OEM pads that were showing up as groves and the Pagids cleaned that off. I measure my rotor thickness after each track weekend (use the same pads as you) and with just under 3 hours of track time I don't get a measurable difference on the rear rotors and the fronts are a less than a 1/10th of a MM.

my front rotors look scored too w/ quite a bit of OE pad left. the car is loud and shakes under braking after 3 track days, but it feels different from when the rotors are warped. could that be an effect of pad residue on the rotor? i have some pagids on order, but will also be having a mod-friendly bmw dealer look into the vibration thing this week.
