Next generation M2 - FWD/AWD?

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Isn't next generation of the 1 series supposed to be FWD? What will that do to the M2? Will BMW go down the same route as Mercedes with their A45 AMG and fit a 2 liter 4 pot engine and make it four wheel drive? Simply because the car that it's based on is a FWD and no bigger engine will fit?

"The 1 Series Hatchback as we know it today will switch over to the UKL front-wheel drive platform and will allow BMW to focus on a new segment. Therefore, the new hatches will continue to be built under the Fxx designation, in this case, F40."

http://www.bmwblog.com/2015/11/24/au...t-wheel-drive/

"The latest edition of the Autobild reports on the next-generation BMW 1 Series Hatchback and 2 Series making the the switch from a rear-wheel drive architecture to the new UKL front-wheel drive."

It's virtually impossible for BMW to produce an M2 with RWD on that platform. I'm also willing to bet just about anything that it won't get any 6 cylinder options even in M-version. Even Porsche put a 4 cylinder machine in the 718.

Maybe the M2 will be a collectable after all? I really hope they don't ramp up production. ;-)

More than likely the next M2 will have a four cylinder motor. The main rival in Porsche has gone to 4 cyl turbo plus the economy of a turbo platform helps with CAFE figures.

Indeed this likely will make the M2 quite collectible especially if the new platform only comes in fwd/AWD. I would hope that BMW would retain RWD as a competitive advantage in performance and give in to the 4 cylinder turbo motor to power it since all the rivals will have the same.

I have faith in M division. as they have, they will come out with something exciting and better for future generation of M cars. M2 may be freaking awesome but I know they recognize there is a market for this segment so I'll sit back and wait.

Well. It will be a great little car. Probably it will even be some nice hybrid help stuff on it making it lightning fast.

But it will have 4 cylinders and all wheel drive. I can't see how the M division can take a FWD-based chassis and turn it into RWD without messing it up. For starters the engine will probably be mounted transverse...

But the future M3/M4 will probably still be RWD...

If it turns out to be true that the next 1 and 2 series are FWD then the M2 will hold its value quite well
Fingers crossed.

Well, the current X1 and current 2-series Active Tourer are built on the FWD-based UKL platform. Would be very surprised if BMW made another platform for small cars with RWD design.

They are taking the exact same route as Mercedes on this. Just one generation later.

There is a market for everything and a budget too.

Until that vin dump thread suggested the M2 was getting a different N55, there was plenty of rumors perpetuating the idea of a 4 cylinder M2 for 2016. Wouldn't be all that surprising given the general trend of other automakers.

It was already posted by SCOTT26 that the new 2 series platform can be fwd or rwd.IMO the next generation M2 will also be rwd.

BMW loves ruining my previous cars.

The X1 35i was in my opinion, the best BMW that was currently available until the new FWD replaced it. Hugely tune-able turbo inline 6 with AWD, sport seats, the flashable transmission, great M-sport suspension, hydraulic steering, and tons of practicality. There was nothing like running 11s on the drag strip with ikea furniture in the hatch! So of course, they replace it with a soul-less FWD 4 cylinder.

Then I buy an M2 to get some of that soul back, and the next-gen 2 series is on the same damn FWD platform!

If this is true, it's Porsche time for me next time around.

They are ruining what? Your cars got better by crappy replacements don't you think?

Porsche already have 4 cylinders in their small sports car. ;-)

I don't know much but I know that swapping between fwd and rwd on the same platform is not going to happen without losing much of the benefits. It would be way too expensive.
