M2 vs e30m3

Hey guys,

Lately ive been thinking of possibly selling my 1990 M3. Ive owned this car for over 12 years and i feel it may be time for a change.

As crazy as it sounds i hate how i paid basically nothing for it compared to what they are worth now. I bought it because it was/is an awsome car and not for what it was possibly going to be worth today as lots of new owners are doing.

So being in this odd/fortunate position selling it is a possibility but i would need to replace the empty void in the garage.

The M2 c/cs is a car that’s caught my eye as they seems to me the closest thing to the e30 this day and age.

Performance wise they dont compare so the question is more around would i simply regret selling the m3 for something newer as i will most probably not be able to get in to an e30 m3 again if i sell this one. Also knowing the low production number of the CS is appealing.

Anyone out there who owns both or has owned both can shed light on my first world world dilemma?

Thanks.

Keep the E30. No question. Buy an M2 competition when they drop in price (or maybe they don't). Perhaps it's the fact that I'm opposite of you and have an M2 C that is very well setup and an absolute blast on track but have always rued not buying an E30 when I had the chance—I can't say. But I think you'd regret selling the E30. Worse is that if you decided to sell, I'm not in a situation to buy

Don't sell one for the other. The e30 might be one of the best investments you have in your portfolio these days.

Ya its a really thought call. Ive had the m3 for over 12 years now so the value has gone up like crazy but i cant see this type of increase again from 2022 on

The e30 is a glorious 2nd car option that functions as a Time Machine / escape pod from the modern world.

The question is how many cars do you have and what’s the purpose of the M2?

I dont own any other weekend car. The M2 CS was a car to simply replace the e30 with something modern that would most probably keep its value.

Drive the M2cs and see what it does for you. I personally think the E30 will keep it's value better. The M2cs will likely eventually settle under MSRP with reasonable miles then perhaps climb back up in a decade or two.

If driving fun is more important than investment value you might like the cs.

Post when you make the switch...

Ya the plan is to go try one next summer there’s a couple for sale not to far from me. Hopefully the dealership will be open to letting me road test one.

There’s no right answer. Both incredible cars. CS is way faster, way more liveable. E30 is a Time Machine experience that is worth bottling. Each the best of their era. Which era do you want to live in on your weekends?

You have a great “problem”! Since you bought it 12 years ago we know you have it because you love it, not because it’s the it thing now. I would never let that go. If you can swing it, get a M2 as another one for the stable.
