I've been thinking about joining, but the benefits aren't clear. Would love to hear from current/previous members.
If you think you're going to buy a new BMW or buy a decent amount of parts from your dealer then yes, the membership will more than pay for itself. Your local CCA chapter should be putting on some events from time to time too. When I was a CCA member in Virginia, the National Capital Chapter was awesome, I met a lot of great people, and they were constantly putting on autocrosses and other club events. They were what I would call true BMW enthusiasts. When I moved to Florida, I found my local chapter to be uptight and boring, basically badge snobs. I let my membership lapse. If you have a good local chapter and take advantage of the discounts then try it out. But if that's not you and all you'll be getting out of it is the Roundel magazine, save your money; there are much better BMW magazines out there.

yes, I was commenting specifically on the fact that you can get additional discounts on the school and other BMW stuff vs. the CCA membership

First time in six years I did not renew. The National Capital Chapter has a great group of folks that are VERY enthusiastic about the brand.

My problem is I’d like to take advantage of events, meets and discounts but usually find it difficult to meet.

I used to be a member for years. The 15% discount was worth it when I owned previous M-cars that were out of warranty as I frequently bought parts from the dealer. The Roundel subscription was nice, too, although I'm not sure if they still include that or if that magazine is still being published. Benefits are mitigated if your car is under warranty, however. I have not renewed my membership in a few years because of it.

Yes, the Roundel is still being published and is included in membership. You can preview a copy here:

You have to be a member for a year before you're eligible for the new car discount.

Getting the rebate is extraordinarily easy. I got one today in fact. You fill out a form with like 5 lines of info and sign it, email them that with a copy of your bill of sale or lease. Literally under 5 mins for free money.

When my membership ends, I'll let it go for reasons that are particularly mine: 1) New car discount does not stack on USAA discount. 2) I lease new every 3 years, so parts discount unneeded. 3) Roundel articles and columnists focused on older cars and dismissive of the new electrified cars. 4) Local club activities and participants focused on things of little interest to me. This is just me YMMV.

Well, it cost a little more than $75. If you win any kind of lottery in the US it is considered income, so BMWCCA sent a 1099G form for $29,100 to the IRS. The FED withheld 20% of the money that BMWCCA would pay towards the car, and we had to settle up with the FED and state at the end of the year. We also had to pay 6% sales tax and excise tax. I also ordered a bunch of options that I had to pay for. In the end the 325iS was about half price, still a great deal.
