raise the RPMs slowly to 12-1500 on cold start and hold it there.. the sound magically goes away.

Exhaust flaps have nothing to do with the loud cold start. It is just the internal wastage (into the turbine housing) that stay open for some seconds to heat up the cat quicker. All modern turbo cars have the same feature.
