If money was not as much a factor, the decision would be very simple for me, 991 GT3. Absolutely love that car and have a couple of buddies who track them regularly. Now that I am getting more experience at the track, I could really see myself in one of those, but realistically the prices for them are still out of my reach............well, at least the wife thinks so :-). I'll probably have to take some baby steps and start with a Carrera S first to get her used to the idea and hope the GT3's drop to a more sensible price someday. (I actually think the 991's GT3's could do so. They seem to be a lot more popular and common than the previous ones, AND with the new one being offered with a manual again, I could see 991 GT3's with PDK having more supply than demand) |

Completely agree. OP, I'd shop a 997.2 or 981 Cayman S.

The 991 has become a target ever since learning I can fit a set of golf clubs in the back. Seems a $70k budget is above what an M2 would cost, but below my (new) $80k M3 or Macan GTS builds. Most important is the M2 (or M3) simply doesn't inspire me to part with my money like the 991 does.
If I didn't play golf so often I'd buy a Cayman but that's another story...

Nick had a lemon - per CR I believe, the 911 (well Porsche's as a whole) are some of the most reliable cars out there.

I had this same debate in my head and even seeked the advice of a friend who happens to just bought a 911 (991) GT3. While I it was really hard to walk away from the 911 a car I always wanted since high school, the M2 is a more practical car for now.

I had two 911's some time back,a 996 and a 997.1 and both had major engine problems and it's well documented. To say I had my fingers burnt is an understatement and I won't go there a third time. The newer models although more reliable can still throw a few surprises so in that regard I'd say they're no more reliable than a BMW for example. |

I personally know two people in Houston who had s65's blow in their m3. I also had a boatload of issues in an n54 car. Those alone don't necessarily mean Bmw is a pos company. Porsche is more reliable than Bmw on average per many different sources. Neither is a Camry however, and its smart to assume you will run into some expenses. I was able to nab a cpo through 2020, so I'm not worried. |

I went down this road too. There was (is?) a 911 in St. Louis that looked good but has been sitting a while. After being on the list for an M2 many months, I decided on a used R8. Loving that so far.
