Almost all of the recent research points to "distracted driving" (making phone calls, texting, etc) being the major cause of collisions, followed by driver fatigue, poor anticipation and excessive speed for the conditions.

Every study that I have read shows that young males (who have an exaggerated opinion of their own capabilities, and often hope that their fast reactions will compensate for their poor anticipation) are the people most likely to be involved in RTAs, a statistic enhanced by their propensity for risk taking.
I agree with the distracted driving being a huge cause of accidents. The texting pushes me over the edge. It's a disease than spans all age groups. I told one of my employees if I caught him answering an email again while I knew he was driving I would take his phone and stomp on it. What the hell is so important. And don't give me the BS that you can multi task.

As far as speed goes, I would say that the difference in speed is the issue. People going at or below the speed limit sharing the road with those going above the limit. And most drivers do not know how to play the game of chess I call driving and anticipate the moves others will make.

That's a nice spot since no one can park next to you on the driver's side, and a car that parks on the passenger side should have enough room to open their door without dinging your car.

But...are you concerned that cars driving by on the elevated path on the driver's side will kick up a rock or something which will hit your car?

It's actually the other way around (I'm in the UK where we sit on the right hand side of the car and drive on the left hand side of the road) :-)

The wall on the left actually means that I can't open the passenger door fully (which isn't an issue for me), and the person on the other side would need to be really, really careless for them to open their door wide enough to ding me.

The elevated road is fairly clean, and if I'm going to get hit by a rock it's much more likely to happen some time during my 60-mile (and mostly 80mph+) daily round trip, rather than when I'm parked.

A bump from an old thread I know, but the mall closest to me has 8 of these parks on diagonally opposite corners of a 4 level parking building.

Absolutely perfect! What makes it even better is that on floor 3 the parks to the left of the car are actually reserved for a specific company inside the mall and thus are never used on the weekend.

And spots like this are exactly why I'm the first one at the mall before they open! And what I had in mind when I started this thread.

IMO parking in spots far away is just asking for problems. Park and live like everyone else...it's easier and you won't get vandalized. Corner spots in crowded lots? Good. Spot far away from everyone? Terrible.

I remember years ago my friend parked his Porsche Boxster in a spot far away and when he came back there were 3 shopping carts that had been rolled into his car with force.

I don't think parking far away is asking for trouble, I think parking like a dick and taking two spots is asking for trouble. I'm not emotionally strong enough to park with everyone else. It drives me crazy. What is so difficult to center yourself between the lines? Granted the spots are getting narrower and narrower, and the soccer moms with the oversized SUVs are clueless.

I personally appreciate and have owned nice cars and think it looks snobby...imagine what a "regular" dude or some kids see it as? I think it's just asking to be vandalized, IMO...

You should have schooled his wife on it being a car person thing, not a BMW thing.

Wouldn't have mattered. She was unapologetic when saying she was the asshole that parked right over the line in our spaces. If you're not a car person, you just don't get it.

The funny thing is that everyone in New Zealand is lazy as fuck and never goes up to the upper levels until the bottom one is completely full. If I arrive at about 11am the ground and 1st floors are a complete mess with 5 cars circling around looking for a spot, people camping out in the clearway watching someone putting their shopping into their car so they can take the spot and so on.

You go up one more level and it is completely deserted! If I remember (or can be bothered haha) I might take a picture of one of the lower levels and one of the upper levels next time I go.

I would say the problem is a combination of jealously/envy and disregard for other people's property.

That said you have a point about certain things/actions being perceived as "snobby" although I'd counter it by saying that no matter how snobby someone is perceived, as long as they didn't hurt you or infringe on your rights, it's not within anyone else's rights to infringe on theirs (i.e., damage someone else's property, hurt somebody, etc.)

People just need to be more respectful.
