My new commuter, an electric car to go with my M3...

After a two year wait, just picked up my new commuter.

Meet my new Tesla Model 3.

I was supposed to leave it a stock commuter... but I just can't help myself!!! At least it's just visual mods for now.

As far as handling the car has been driving itself during my commutes

J/k but on the short times I’ve taken it around some turns, it handles very well. Turn in feels quick, stays flat, and seems to get the power down easily coming out of turns. With spirited driving it very much feels every bit as good as a BMW. Will see how it is at the limit... dunno if the traction control can make it behave like it has an LSD or does it just limit power.

The rest of the time I just leave it in autopilot and relax (while paying attention with both hands ready)

Power wise that instant torque makes the TM3 feel much faster off the line, however the V8M3 has more top end power as it gets to 8k. That being said quick search shows the TM3 can do a 1/4 in 13.3 @ 110mph. My 6 spd manual V8M3 can do 12.9 in the 1/4 in the right hands (which is not me).

Another interesting thing is that my V8M3 will get about 225 to 250 miles on a full tank that costs anywhere from $50 to $60. The TM3 will get 275 to 310 on a full charge that costs $19.50 at the local supercharger (even cheaper once I have a charger at home)

Yeah, all my neighbors don’t see the appeal of the 3 either... they all think its a regular 3 series, but that glorious V8 roar in the AM makes it all worth it.

That being said my electric 3 probably appeals to my neighbors cause it doesn’t wake them up in the AM

So is this your way of trying to stay within the good graces of the marxist progressives in your area? Don't want to get excluded from the neighborhood block party?

Those black rims and dark roof make TM3 look bad! Did you go with the higher capacity battery?

FWIW, one of the locals who couldn't get his GT4 out of service in time, took his Model 3 out to Laguna Seca.

First of all just to be clear autopilot is not full self driving. That being said it is probably one of the most advanced driving assistance technology out there.

Been using it extensively for the past several days.
- very intuitive to use... just tap the lever on the right twice and away it goes. The only other driving assist I have tried was on the Honda Clarity and searching and decifering what the buttons and icons on the dash meant was not intuitive.
- makes sitting in traffic a breeze. South OC traffic can be very bad and very slow. I am much more relaxed and much less fatigued sitting in traffic for 30 to 45 minutes in this. So far braking and accelerating feels much more intuitive in this car. It handles other cars cutting you off in traffic easily as well.
- makes long highway stretches a breeze as well. It doesn’t wander in the lane, takes turns easily... although it does wander a bit in the turn. It also doesn’t seem to slow down for turns on the freeway either. Probably best to take over when transitioning from one freeway to the next. Also if you are in a lane with other lanes merging in and out the car will gently center you between the merging lanes rather than dart... still in this instance it’s best to take over as well. I also try to stay alert to changing road surfaces to make sure the car is picking up the correct lines... and so far it has picked up the correct lanes all the time.
- went to go hang out with some friends at the Eibach/ Honda meet at the Autoclub raceway. We sat in line for spectator parking for at least an hour... I had autopilot the whole way through. If the car sat too long you would have to tap the accelerator to get it going again... that was sitting for maybe 5 minutes at a time. If it sat really long the autopilot would disengage and you’d have to be slightly moving to re engage. Still made sitting in line much easier.
- Auto lane change is a nice feature. If there is enough room to lane change... it will lane change. By enough room... if there is a gap it will go even if there is what feels like 1/2 a car length between your rear bumper and the car behind you in the next lane. That being said you still need to look over and make sure it is clear before you let the car do it. In tight conditions it is probably best for you to lane change your self. Also it can’t compensate or predict if other drivers around your are acting like douches. For example if it is totally clear and you activate lane change... if the other driver sees you signal it can’t predict if that driver is going to accelerate to block you from changing... if the other driver accelerates to block you the autolanechange didn’t cancel... it seemed to keep going. That being said it is best to use auto lane change if it is completely clear.
- I’ve had a chance to use autopark to back into my work spot... that is nice to have. However it needs two cars on either side to work and lines in the parking space. If you want a corner spot you need to park it yourself. I still need to try out the parralel park feature.

I never use autopilot in side streets and I would never use autopilot on a fun twisty road because the suspension tuning on the Model 3 is spot on.

Another interesting thing happened... we brought my friend’s 3 year old with us to the car show. With my friend being an automotive engineer for a big local company, he always brings home different cars to test and his 3 year old gets a kick from accelerating. Anyhow his 3 year old kept egging me on to go accelerate faster... so I took the car off of “chill” mode and switched to standard and took off... his kid’s reply was “wow that’s too fast.... again again again”... that made my day. (Not to worry... at another car show I taught his kid how to properly rev my V8M3... he got a huge grin from that and keeps asking when I’ll bring it over)

Sat in one this weekend, and the build quality still boils my blood but outside of that, I am sure its a solid DD. As far as autopilot, I wouldnt trust it for the life of me for at least a couple more years.

I was worried about the build quality as well at first. Another friend of mine got one a few weeks before me and his has been horrible.
- so many paint defects (areas that was touched up, areas with actual pain drops) that it needs a full repaint under warranty... which will be done at a body shop
- none of his autopilot features will activate... keeps saying still calibrating and he has over 150 miles on it (supposed to calibrate within first 50). He probably gets irritated when I text him to say... btw my autopilot is working... then btw my auto lane change is working now... then btw the car parked itself
- his phone as key has been glitchy as hell too... we both have iPhoneX... and mine has been working great.

My theory is that his vin# is 10,000 cars below mine. Some things happened which they tried to fix hoping that the new owner won’t notice. Some of the body fixes may have misaligned the autopilot sensors so it won’t calibrate. Unfornately they sold it to a very very meticulous owner.

Since his car the factory went through a shutdown and retooling which is my vin.

I had my friend who is an automotive engineer look over my car To spot anything I would need to bring it back for as far as build quality. He works for a large local car company. Before this company he previously use to work on quality control in another large local car company. He is the kind of person where when we go to things like the LA Auto show and I get really excited over the horsepower and specs and he gets facinateded by things like panel gaps, paint quality, door seals.

Anyhow he mentioned the panel gaps where pretty good on mine and paint quality was great. Everyting was aligned properly. He did mention where the front fender meets the front bumper was a bit close and stuck out oddly (but then again that same spot sticks out in myM3 as well). He also did mention that the door stamping could’ve been twicked a bit better to match the rest of the body panels. But overall it was much better than he expected he said... essentially there are many far worse cars. He also mentioned the chassis engineer at his company was also impressed with the suspension tuning. He also mentioned that a certain german automaker is trying to use Tesla’s drivetrain and computer as a benchmark for their EV.

As a far as autopilot... it’s an assist.

Congrats on the new M3! I'm glad to see you didn't cancel your reservation. As I've said before, Tesla and other EV/PHEV car owners like to refer to the Tesla Model 3 as "M3" as if the real BMW M3 never existed before
