My dad really misses his - we hope to pick one up again someday.

It was the first M in the family.

I had the luck of driving one of these again about 2 weeks ago, having been away from one for about 8 years.

It's truly an absolute gem and puts any recent car I've driven and owned to shame. The visceral feel combined with accuracy gives the car a feeling like it is an extension of the driver and is hard for any "modern" car to match.

I am currently in the odd position of having one of each. I've had a 3.0si coupe for a couple of years and recently picked up an M. You're absolutely right that the 'lesser' car is a gem in its own right. I don't really mind the electric steering, especially because the front of the car is so agile and quick. It also weighs almost 200 lbs. less than the M, almost all of that due to the magnesium N52 block vs. the cast iron S54. Which also goes to the improved front end responsiveness.

But the M is, well, an M. More power, LSD, more edginess, more visceral feel. I truly enjoy driving both cars and having a hard time deciding to part with the si.

In a perfect world I'd find a 'donor' M and swap the hydraulic steering and rear suspension/LSD into the si. That would really be something.

That would be an interesting proposition to graft the M hydraulic steering into the 3.0si. You can easily get the pump and belt drive hardware from the E90 N52 and the rack from the M (not sure if the front subframe is the same). Limited slip diffs are easy enough to build, so if the LSD in the M requires a different rear sub frame then I think it'd be easier to just build the diff. Not sure what would need to be done with the electric motor in the dash though. If you unplug it, does it not put any drag on the column. Interesting.

Is there that much difference between the hydro M and the electric 3.0si steering? I rather enjoy the electric in my 3.0si Coupe. I have hydraulic in my E90 and my Z3 (and my since retired E30), and I have to say the 3.0si Coupe's EPS is way better than the electric rack set up I've driven many times in the F3X series cars, which is pathetic. To be honest, I didn't realize the 3.0si Coupe DIDN'T have hydraulic when I test drove it. Only when I went to check the condition under hood did I realize it had no pump.

Always wanted one but my head kept touching the headliner. Just couldn't find a comfortable seating position.

It took me a while to get comfortable seating position in the M. I added a neck(little lower) support and boom....perfect sitting position achieved.

My 2 cents.
.

Ditto X2
I just picked one up last month. A black on black manual 3.0si w/t 40K miles
2 elder owners, garaged kept, stored for winters...etc.
It was a great buy and its a wonderful car to drive. However,
i have to A. ditch the run craps tires, and B. the car disparately needs a LSD.
The electric steering i can deal/put up.(funny thing is when i get in my M3 and i try to maneuver out of my driveway, it feels like i have no power steering ) I get people on the street/roads give me the thumps up constantly, its a head turner. I'm glad i added this to my stable.

Ahhh the one that got away..

NOT!

11 years in and I'm still loving the car as much as from day one... actually more so! Many cars since may have improved on power and handling, but the recipe for perfection on the Z4MC has yet to be replicated. Nor can be.

I am reminded by this every time I drive the MC after I've driven my so-called decently modded (and more powerful) F36.

Having had a Z4 M coupe since 2007, I think this review nailed a lot of what makes it special: very connected, very analogue, very hard. When I drive this car, I always feel it's either on or off - it's not (and should not be) a car to drive leisurely.

A special car to be sure, and for me (along with my E39 M5), a keeper.

It's my unicorn! I recently picked up an si coupe in 6mt so I can learn on that before I get the M. The electric steering sucks IMO so the hydraulic should be a great improvement. My only concern is that most people say it's a terrible daily driver and I'm currently driving the Z about 50 miles round trip in traffic. It probably won't stop me from getting one. In the meantime, I'm giving the Z some cosmetic M modifications.

I have always loved the coupe style of this Z. I used to fly into the Greenville SC airport often and stare at it on display. Bold, classic design

Exactly. Terrible, overrated Bangle-era cars

In all seriousness, I miss my '06 MC every day. Bought it at 30k miles and sold it at 35k miles 1.5 years later at breakeven. Todd and Paul are spot on in that these cars will begin appreciating in the next 3-5 years as cars become further from the truth (i.e., more digitized, computerized, autonomous).

All will be put back in place as I'm in the process of picking up a 6MT "stripper" E90 M3 ZCP this week. No, it won't be as "raw" as the MC, but as a 4-seater I can't complain.

(Or maybe I just don't want the prices to increase, so I can add a coupe to my collection)

BMW has some interesting cars in the lineup that can continue the tradition of pure driving pleasure from the Z4 M: M140i/ M240i and M2.
The new Z4 is just to be presented so I don't think that the fans have real reasons to complain.
