Got my 1200 mile break-in service scheduled for this morning. I'm interested on how the top end performs.

It pulls consistently from 5500-7000. I'm not noticing any drop-off in power. The sound though is really nice in the upper range...definite attraction.

its -15 to -30c every day here for the last month and lots of snow and ice on the road. I cant drive it firm as break in has suggested. Plus my trip to work is 5 minutes or so and it doesn't get past cold on the meter. When I've taken it on the weekend I've fully warmed it up tried to drive firm with low rpm loading and some pulls to 5000rpm but those are rare as everything is bloody close to where I live. I deliberately have to just go and 'drive' around to accomplish break in here during the winter.

Will all the short trips and gentle driving and the engine never being able to properly warm up do any harm?

I wonder if any of those leasing are sticking to the suggested procedures?

I purposely drive to warm up to operating temperature preferably when the temperature goes in the middle. The minimum to "OK" if it's an occasional short drive. I have a short commute too so I have to drive just to drive because it's recommended for new engines before break in. But the car is fun so I don't mind all that driving at all!

Doubt it. Usually the people who lease are not the type of enthusiast that will care for the car with concern for future owners or if they were to keep it long-term.

Personally, I would never buy an off-lease M car for that reason

I now have 1100 miles and I'm scheduled Thursday for the break in service. I'm looking forward to slamming the pedal to see how quick this car can be!

FYI you do know that before any cars leaves the BMW factory ill go through a dyno pull...right?
This sounds much more like it!

I've said this in many threads already: the break in period is for the rear diff....not the engine. Those piston rings and everything will seat in the first 40 miles as long as you are under periodic load.

So you think 1,200 miles is overkill?

Took this right from the M2 Owner's manual. Can we just follow these simple instructions and end this debate forever?

does "full load" means
- gas pedal all the way down ?
- peak power / torque ?

Interesting, so why does the Diff need 1200 miles?

Wonder how much this type of break-in harms the differential?

I may be breaking some BMW laws... but during my ED I couldn't help but take her above 106 mph, I respected the 5500 rpm limit as much as possible but between cruising at high speeds on the autobahn and driving on the Nurburgring I couldn't help but break the break in pro series.

Some may argue it will cause harm and I cannot say it won't. I will report back as time goes on since this beautiful car will be with me for many years to come!

I will give my level best to respect the run-in instructions.

My two cents is there's a good combination of actual mechanical break in needed as well as driver learning that BMW accounts for.
