I thought it was common knowledge that the production was for 2015-2018... Hence not limited production.
I seriously doubt that Bmw can only offer this car with a manual box, it worked with the parts bin 1M, this is a fully developed car this time round. Also nowadays DCT gearbox does not mean not a drivers car. |

As I posted yesterday in a related topic, give us the choice.
Manual perhaps base. That satisfies a romantic idea of manual defining enthusiast--and quiets the critics and magazines. THEN, Offer the DCT as a fine option--and it will also sell just as well. Happy to pay more for that option. Better that option for me [no flames please] than more and more "connectivity/sound" trying to help everyone ride along with me via more and more and more technology. The DCT is a great box, and allows a lot of cross-over driving opps, if wanted. It's used well in several models and opens the door to more sales opportunities. Why limit the revenue potentials. |

The car should (and will) absolutely come both ways. (but if it came 6MT only, I wouldn't shed a tear, cuz that's how I plan to get mine anyway) |

Initially I thought, well, they would be dumb to limit their market by only offering 6MT. Think of all the customers that would choose another option! Which leads me to the marketing brilliance of such a move.
Think about it: You want James Bond, you get an M4. You want James Dean, you get an M2. Give them similar numbers, and the difference is all in the flavor - EVERYONE WINS! Discuss amongst yourselves... |

As regards gearbox/transmission, the forum fellow who managed to disclose the precise engine type that will power the M2, also disclosed that the M2 will be offered as manual and automatic.
So - except if BMW has changed its mind in the meantime (as they did for example by shelving the 4-cyl plan for the M2 in favor of a 6-cyl) - the choice will be yours. Your next problem might be that you cannot make up your mind to choose.

Different angle approach: if BMW happens to score a home run with the M2, wouldn't there be some room for an expensive limited edition M2 hardcore version (GTS/CSL) ?
Dr. Kay Segler (former M Division boss who secured the 1M project) about the 1M at Autosport Awards 2010: "Manual, like the old guys did it, just manual, but that's the perfect sports car of the future" (02:27):

I've always been a manual guy, but I've been disappointed with the driving experience in newer BMW models. Drive by wire throttles, turbos, clutch delay valves, etc. all detract from the satisfaction I used to get from driving a manual. I drove a E46 330 for 100K and never did get used to the clutch. I know they can do better, based on the S54 in my old E36. Maybe they can get it right, but if not, I'll be voting with my wallet - probably for a VW!

I respectfully disagree. With increased price point just to get a DCT, by having to move up to M3 [with 4 doors??] or the M4, customers will walk away.
An M2 with a DCT might actually be just as rockabilly, as you wish---maybe in Dockers, not tuxedoes. Manuals [for tranny's] just ought not be the final definition of a fine automobile. I just happily plead the option for DCT. The price point difference will be enough to hold plenty of M2 customers, old and new, without forcing them to spend more on the M3/4. And that manual M2 could have a Heater Delete option for real defined rough and tumble if that would make anyone happy--as long as the option sheet at least allows for the DCT. All conjecture at this point...but a load of fun...thanks. |

If its a volume car, no way in hell will it be offered in 6MT only. In order to separate the M2 from the M4, it could be with the 8ZF tranny?

Speaking of manual transmission, did any of the forum members managed to drive the new M3/M4 with a MT, I am very interested on how does the experience compares to the one found in the non-M cars like the M235i.
TIA
